I do not have nor have I ever had microsoft edge but the update program is running in task manager startup. Is is safe to delete? And how did it get there?

      Leave it alone.
Edge is the default browser in Windows and may still be used to open some files, so you want the latest, security hole fixed version.
It’s also handy to have a second browser for the occasional site that just won’t work with your fav. browser.

      cheers, Paul

In my experience edge updates are started by the Task Scheduler.  Microsoft adds an entry in Task Manager Startup to launch edge when a user signs on (and at other times).  This instance does not display on the screen and is used to minimize edge startup time.  The presence of this entry is controlled by the HKCU Run key and Edge will re-write the entry if it is deleted.  On my system I disable this bad behavior through the group policy editor as shown here –

I see it does not hurt anything but I found it odd because LTSC being a stripped down version of Windows 10 does not come with any browser.

check Task Scheduler (taskschd.msc) & view the Task Scheduler Library root folder for “MicrosoftEdgeUpdateTaskMachineCore” & “MicrosoftEdgeUpdateTaskMachineUA” – delete those tasks.

then in Registry editor (regedit.exe), look for the following registry keys:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\edgeupdate
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\edgeupdatem

delete those “edgeupdate” & “edgeupdatem” entries and reboot.

I have to repeat this procedure when installing a new version (or re-installing an existing version) of MS Edge when I download & run the Edge MSI installer from the MS Edge business download page when running Win10 LTSC 2019 & LTSC 2021.

Actually, if you set those two scheduled tasks to “Disabled” instead of deleting them, they won’t get updated.

Also, if your change the Start value for those two registry entries to 4 (Disabled), they also won’t get updated.

What happens is, during the Edge update/re-install process, it only creates those entries if they don’t already exist. If they do already exist, it leaves them as is (i.e. they stay disabled.)

BTDT years ago and Edge has never change them since I initially disabled them!
