KB4554364 may be in the Microsoft Update Catalog, but it is not in Windows Update.

This is just not cool with everyone using VPN to work from home. I’m sure glad I haven’t approved the March cumulative updates yet, and I don’t dare do it now, especially with the “fix” in doubt. If VPN breaks on someone who is at home, it will be a major pain to do anything to fix it.

this is not the first time MS released a new out-of-band update only thru MS Update Catalog and not thru WU, geekdom

take for instance the old KB4522016 update for 1903 back in late September 2019. THAT update was only available from the MS Catalog site and never distributed thru windows update & WSUS

there will be occasional times when MS will only issue new updates only thru MS Update Catalog and there will be other times when MS will issue certain updates only thru Windows Update and not thru MS Update Catalog

what kind of VPN are you using and what Win10 version are you running?

Microsoft only posted the new VPN-related patches from Windows 10 versions 1709 to 1903/1909.
Versions 1703, 1607 & older either don’t seem to have the VPN problem nor new patches for even older Win10 versions were made.

It’s unknown whether or not MS will issue a VPN-related fix for version 2004/20H1 or whether 2004/20H1 has that specific problem in the first place.

I can confirm the results of Anonymous (Guest) above (https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/microsoft-posts-a-fix-for-the-vpn-related-dropped-internet-connection-bug/#post-2212486). I run Windows 10 Enterprise, version 1809, on my work computer. I downloaded the .msu file for KB4554354 and installed it. The whole installation process took nearly an hour, which surprised me. But, there were no errors at any time and the machine successfully rebooted.

After logging back in, I opened up the Pulse Secure application and connected to my work network. Once I had provided my credentials, the network icon in the status area changed to the limited network icon (has the black exclamation point on the yellow background). I launched Chrome, which dutifully loaded the cached copy of google.com. I then went to microsoft.com, which I have not visited recently, and the connection timed out. I disconnected from the VPN, reloaded the Microsoft page, and it displayed without error.

Back to the drawing board, Microsoft developers.

MS rushed to get it out and it does not fix the issue. Pulse Secure does not work on Windows 1809 with the KB installed.

Only solution is to do a fresh reinstall Windows 10 before March updates. Uninstall the March updates does not fix it from our IT department test so far.

on the other hand, I manually downloaded & installed the KB4554354 update for LTSC 2019 v1809 and it did fix the IE11 crashing problem when printing to a web based services HP printer through a WiFi/WLAN connection – so the KB4554354 update was not a total loss as it did sort of fix something.

not really geekdom. and you should be GLAD you did not receive the KB4554364 update from Windows Update

because there are now recent reports of the KB4554364 update causing WiFi connections for some users to stop working as noted by this MSPoweruser page:

the KB4554364 fix manually obtained from MS Catalog seems to fix one problem but cause another problem

Curious why this patch company is considering this Zero- day.

I can’t find any info saying it is.  We don’t have VPN issues and I really don’t want to introduce any by patching something like this if it isn’t necessary…..

Got the same issue – machine disconnects from the network and a reboot resolves it. Lose connection to VPN and proxy disables because of no internet connection.

Any fixes???
