Has anybody information why postings to the newsserver msnews.microsoft.com just disappear without a trace since Friday?
There are rumours that the server crashed and everybody left for the weekend, others say MS drops the usenet groups altogether, but I didn’t see any announcement for this, and neither have I gotten any notifications on postings I sent that they won’t be accepted any more — they just disappear.

So look out — perhaps you’ll have to make room for a lot of refugees soon on Woody’s Lounge!

    cheersRegards, Klaus

Obviously others have had the same problem

Actually, I see a post of yours going via google

I changed to the news server of my ISP to get messages through to the regular Word newsgroups, and use google for the microsoft.public.word.general and word.programming newsgroups that have been discontinued by MS.

The following article on news.cnet.com tells how MS dropped usenet from MSN 18 months ago, but says it keeps the groups on microsoft.com.

I wonder if they just test how much of a reaction they get if they shut that down, too; since most users have accessed the microsoft.public newsgroups directly through msnews.microsoft.com (and many wouldn’t know how to change to another server) that would be very bad news for the MVPs working on those newsgroups.

        cheersGreetings, Klaus

Per Graham Mayor (very reliable source) the servers have been down all weekend. Some postings via other routes are making it up. I would recommend using the Internet method.

Thanks for that Charles. Can’t get in via Internet but will try again later.

I’ve heard that the MSFT NNTP server crashed on Friday, then they had a hardware problem.

bravoTuesday morning in Germany … The server seems to come back to life (just a few new posts up to now, so I’ll wait a while until they synchronized everything before changing back to msnews.microsoft.com).

Thank you all for information and support in these dark times! Shouldn’t have panicked — showed me how I addicted I’ve become bummer.

      cheersRegards, Klaus

It seems that the newsgroups are back! – although the number of posts is wayyyyy down. (Sort of…) Using Outlook Express I was able to both download new messages and post responses (and then see that the responses had actually been posted).

It appears that some groups are back up and others may not be. As of 8 A.M. Tue (CDT) it appears that new users and vbabeginners are up (among others) and that vba.customization, vba.addins, vba.userforms, word.tables, and word.printingfonts may still be down.

It still looks like any posts made on msnews on the weekend got lost, and anything posted on other news servers don’t show up.

        cheersRegards, Klaus
