      Dear Woody,

Should those of us with Home versions of 10 search for this (or these) update(s), and hide them until we get the go ahead from you with the MS Defcon rating change?

Will the old, or original, Win 10 Anniversary update still be in our hidden updates, or will it have disappeared?

If it is still in the hidden list, then what?

As always, thank you for the advice and guidance!

If you don’t have the Anniversary Update (version 1607) installed, this KB will not appear. If you’ve blocked the Anniversary Update, you’re fine.

They are going to do this kind of thing to Win 7&8 with the rollup format for patching. If one thing breaks Windows, you have to forego the security patches when you uninstall.

What a shame to take a long-time stable version of an OS and cripple it!!

Hi Woody, having problems installing this update here. Update process never succeeds after rebooting. After 3 times trying, I managed to uninstall this incomplete update, but I wonder what to do now? I used to be able to hide updates in Win 8, but how to do this in Win 10?

Thanks, already forgot about that. But can I still use this being on version 1607 (yeah, I know, should have blocked that update too)?

    • #36725

Sure. Just make sure you click the Advanced box on the first pane in the troubleshooter.

For what it’s worth, the latest update set for Win 10 Anniversary seems to have installed okay here on my test VM (WinVer shows 14383.82). In cursory testing I’m not seeing any obvious problems.

I see about 50 processes, though, and 1.22 GB, just to sit on an empty desktop, and that’s AFTER a serious bout of trimming to lean it down. Before the Anniversary update it was 42 processes and about 1 GB even after the same treatment.

It will make Windows Update more reliable by removing a large number of superseded updates from the picture.
Why assume that the new updates will be broken by default? Previous experience tells that there are not so many catastrophically broken updates and that those few were generally fixed after a while. It is not a disaster if one or another of the updates is not installed for a certain period until it gets fixed or retired by Microsoft. We do this all the time right now.

KB3176936 installed during normal operations, then at the of the day I restarted instead of using update and shutdown to let it install KB3176934. The update took a while–restarting more than once–winver now shows Version 1607 (OS Build 14393.82).

I’ve only 38 other processes showing in Task manager, Background processes(11) and Windows processes(27). Memory says 1.4/3.9 GB (36%).

None of the universal apps have reappeared that I was able to uninstall. Things have remained fairly benign now that I’ve turned off the (useless to me) Action/Notification Center too. See http://www.windowscentral.com/how-disable-action-center-windows-10. Hibernate is also turned off (POWERCFG /HIBERNATE OFF).

The useless Connect/Project (Projecting to this PC) stuff remains despite its own message:
“This device doesn’t support receiving Miracast, so you can’t project to it wirelessly.”
I have no wireless anything so it has no chance anyway.
