AskWoody LoungerAugust 16, 2019 at 11:39 pm #1909319What a riot. Microsoft’s page for the Win7 August 16 update (KB4517297) which resolves the VB issues has a link for getting this update which incorrectly points to the August 10 update (KB4512486) which introduced the VB issues! The upshot is that Microsoft on their support page can’t even correctly point people to the new update.

GuestAugust 17, 2019 at 11:14 am #1910374“KB4517297 will have to be vetted for Telemetry” and I’ll wait for more than one source from more that one website forum as I’ll have to have more than one singular source for that no telemetry confirmation regarding August’s(KB4517297) and any future Security Only KBs.
But it’s looking good for that Aug Security only update once Symantec/MS fix the SHA-2 only code signing issues in Symantec’s security products.
The DEFCON system is plenty useful for waiting and vetting for telemetry and any other MS/KB issues that so often come up. And I use this website’s and other website’s, (Ghacks/etc.) as well for that needed maintaining of constant vigilance with respect to MS’s security, privacy, and bad QA/QC patching issues.

AskWoody MVPAugust 17, 2019 at 1:36 pm #1910591Just been updating for VB/VBA/VBS patch on Win7 x64 and x86 and also Win8.1 x64 and can assure you that there is no telemetry in these patches. They just fix what MS ‘fixed’ (for want of expletives) in the SMQR or Security Only patches released on August patch Tuesday.
SFC /verify only shows NO inegrity violations on all systems (hardware installs no VM’s)
usual task scheduler areas are clear, as are the GP settings and Performance/event trace etc..Windows - commercial by definition and now function...

These updates provide fixes for VB6, VBA and VBScript errors caused by the August Patch Tuesday updates.
The MS pages say:

AskWoody PlusAugust 17, 2019 at 2:00 pm #1910602NOI, but I think the statement for Win 8.1 should read
Note This update contains all the quality and security changes in KB4512489 (released August 16, 2019). While it does not replace KB4512489 on Windows Update, if you install this update you do not need to install KB4512489.
The KB numbers are different.

AskWoody_MVPAugust 17, 2019 at 8:36 pm #1910891This update (KB4517297) does not show when I check for Windows Updates on my computer. It is available only in the Update Catalog.
As an additional note, sometime in the last few hours when I checked for updates on my computer, this preview showed as an optional update:

AskWoody MVPAugust 18, 2019 at 1:30 am #1911199Woody, Looks like MS also dumped 11 cumulative updates for various versions of W10,
as well as 8 EARLY SMQR previews for Win 7/8.1 and server 2008 on Saturday 17th Aug in the catalog. Very unusual for Saturday Patches! Defcon-1?
https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=2019-8Can confirm on W8.1 that the preview is on WU.
Remember that Epson dot matrix issue fix back in 2017..Windows - commercial by definition and now function... -

GuestAugust 20, 2019 at 11:21 am #1913232I installed KB4517298 for Windows 8.1 on my Ivy Bridge computer yesterday. It seemed normal at first. Today, when I started up, after login I got the message “Preparing Windows” and the circle of dots. This went on for about five minutes, without any result, so I shut down Windows with the power button. I restarted, and got a black screen for another 4-5 minutes, then Windows booted normally.
I noticed that Windows seemed sluggish, so I rebooted, which was a normal reboot. Windows was still noticeably slower. I then ran Steve Gibson’s InSpectre, which told me that MeltDown protection was enabled (it wasn’t before) but no Spectre protection.
I don’t like a slow computer, so I uninstalled KB4517298, and things are back to normal. I will take my chances with BlueKeep and will invest in a copy of Macrium Reflect.
