Some people call it “Service Release 1” but Microsoft bristles at that nomenclature.I have no idea what a “Service Release” is, in this context. Guess

Microsoft is working like crazy to get the Win10 installer to work. Yep, KB 3081427 might help.
But… unless you want to wrangle with it, just wait until MS sends you notification that the upgrade is ready. A very large percentage of those who wait get their systems upgraded with zero problems.

GuestAugust 6, 2015 at 1:42 pm #50688That is, I’m sure, good advice. But, can you tell us how MS is going to send the “notification”? Here is why I ask:
(1) I have the “Get Windows 10” icon in the taskbar. If I click it, I see a window heading that says “Windows 10 is Downloading!”. In smaller type, it says: “Windows 10 is downloading in the background. We’ll let you know when you can start the upgrade.” In fact, nothing is downloading – Task Manager shows no network activity at all.
(2) There is a button labeled “View download progress”. If I click on this button, it opens Windows Update which says “Downloading Windows 10” – I get a progress bar and a % complete listing. The update does download, and the update process starts. I assume this means that MS considers my PC ready for update, but the update fails. So, is there some other “notification” I should be looking for? I wasn’t pushing for an early update, but MS started the process for me. (I have Windows Update set to download and install updates – I did this to make sure I had everything I needed for the update – I normally have this turned off.)

First, turn off automatic update. (Sound familiar? ๐
That’ll give you more control over when everything happens.
The notifications I’ve received appear as balloons over the Get Win10 icon in the taksbar. When I go to Windows Update, the Win10 upgrade is ready for me to approve.
Don’t be too surprised if background downloading doesn’t show up on any of your tracing programs. It can be very, very slow.
When the update fails, what happens? I just posted an InfoWorld article on one common problem, http://www.infoworld.com/article/2960528/patch-management/windows-10-patch-kb-3081424-can-crash-fail-to-install.html
