Has anyone ever encountered a problem with the Microsoft store updating apps?

It started a couple of days ago – a pop-up when I first signed on to the computer – a message that said, “Give us a minute, we are updating Skype.”  I hit “close,” but the app never updated.

I uninstalled Skype, thinking I would just reinstall.

Unfortunately, I hit an error downloading – “0x80073CF9” – it’s an error on “their end”.

I then tried to update other apps … got the same error message.

The troubleshooter says I have a hanging or crashing app – but its not Skype because I uninstalled it.

Could it be the Microsoft Store app that is crashing?

I can’t find any setting for Microsoft store to update it or repair it.

Also… i did run sfc /scannow and the DISM command to RestoreHealth – they didn’t work to fix this problem

Thanks for the insight, everyone.  Corrupted files is what I have been battling for 2 days .. did an all-nighter.

I couldn’t open Microsoft store apps or update them.

My desktop Explorer experiences were degrading very quickly.

I did a boot into safe mode and discovered, while milling about my PC, that I had an “overrun of a stack based buffer”.  A stack smashing …is what people call it.  A vulnerability…I discovered while trying to open an app in safe mode that I couldn’t open.

Because My PC was becoming erratic and not functioning well…I decided to do a Repair Upgrade.  It uses the windows 10 ISO.  It went much better than I thought it would.

It took about an hour.  And when completed, my files were intact…but I still had to do a clean boot…to deal with some of the Microsoft store app problems.  I got flooded with over 30 updates in the Store app.

And now I am being flooded with more windows updates..from the past…resurfacing. And a repeat of October and November’s updates.

So if you get struck with the stack smashing…here’s one way to deal with it.  When I went to the Windows Community Forums to see if anyone else has this problem.. I saw that in the last 2 days people were posting about the error code from the Store App that I also had

What version of Windows are you running, 10 or 11?

Has anyone ever encountered a problem with the Microsoft store updating apps?

Yes, but for me, the only fix doing an “over-the-top repair install” of Windows 10.

I’m not a career IT guy, but a multi-decade enthusiast, but I’ve done 3 of them over the last 2 years or so and all were successful.  ONE of them was to fix a chronic windows store problem what was unfixable any other way including the powershell Windows store fix commands.

Important note, I would NOT do an “over-the-top repair install” without a fresh image backup at the ready on two different external sources.

Yes…the powershell commands I tried to use to re-register the Store App or reinstall the store app…were unsuccessful.

When you did the reinstall, did you lose your files and apps?

I did not lose any files or apps.  A clean install would have wiped my personal file and apps.  The repair (not clean) install was terrific.

      https://downdetector.com/status/microsoft/

Microsoft store has been down per downdetector. Also, Edge updated but will not show the update screen of what’s new. The browser works but something is not right with javascript.

Yes, it sounds to me as if the MS Store is corrupted. Help is at hand to both reset and/or reinstall it:

      https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/windows-10-store-fails-with-0x80073cf9/b8ec2724-b087-4599-8651-0b35760962d6

Personally, I’d go straight for a reinstall – and then avoid using the wretched thing, if at all possible 😉

Yes… powershell commands and DISM commands were ineffective to deal with this.  No integrity violations found.  I was forced to do the Repair Upgrade

Is your copy of the Microsoft Store fully working again?

If so, you can feel free to mark this thread as resolved by simply submitting a reply and choosing “resolved” as the status in the drop-down box just above the text input box for a reply.  🙂

I appreciate you wishing to shut this topic down as ‘resolved’, yet I find the other comments/contributors with their own experiences VERY helpful, as they comment on what worked/didn’t work for them, and had OP comment on what she has tried. Isn’t that the purpose of AW? To learn from eachother?

Feel feel free to correct me if I’m wrong🙂

            • #2718547

Unfortunately, that is a side effect of marking the Topic as resolved. It does give folks searching the site a very quick visual indication that there is a resolution to the problem indicated in that thread, but it does also shut down the thread for further commentary.

That’s the single biggest reason that the actual marking of a Topic as resolved has been left to the discretion of the thread’s original poster. By not marking it as resolved, it invites further commentary on other solutions that may have worked for others AND leaves the door open for anyone else in the future who may experience the same problem, but for whom the solution(s) presented in the thread were ineffective.

Some folks want to leave their thread open for that possibility while others seem to prefer marking their issue as resolved immediately after their problem is solved.

I was simply trying to point out that if the problem she experienced has been solved to her satisfaction, the option was there to mark the topic as resolved.

Not sure yet.  The windows updates have just finished at 8:30 pm. It may take a day or 2 to get a feel for it.   I will follow up to mark it resolved if that is accurate and you all prefer it.

The one thing I was surprised about …when Windows says its “cleaning up” during the update process…it’s not kidding.

I always print a copy of the “installed updates”  screen.  The new one only has 9 updates on it…just a handful from today and a few from a month or so ago.  As the though the last 5 years didnt exist.

… It totally messed up my Win 10 Pro. I have had stable PC for 5 years (minor problems) but this is / was big … I was able to almost get back to normal (without inplace upgrade/repair), but man … There are numerous posts in Microsoft Community (one of them: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/how-to-solve-error-code-0x80073cf9/195a7d5a-8170-4f04-8c68-36bd6e3031ae?page=2) and it seems that they messed Windows App SDK or something and bunch of apps suddenly got problems.

Funny thing… I experienced this problem before downloading November updates.  During the course of the night, I tried to update Windows, thinking that would help me with the Microsoft store problems.  Even with this Stack Smashing error…November updates downloaded without a problem.

One update that came through after the Repair Upgrade was kb5033052.  An update stack package that was designated as an optional update.

        • #2719243

The original update that triggered this came down in the background.  It wasn’t Windows update/November patch related.  But the easiest way to fix it is with a patch after the fact.

      UPDATE:
A recent article on Bleeping Computer explains and describes a repetitive workaround:

Microsoft advises impacted users to install the new WinAppSDK 1.6.3 update three times instead of the preview update to fix the app update and installation problems.

To check if your Windows 10 system is affected, you have to run the following PowerShell command (which will only return a value if it finds the buggy WinAppSDK 1.6.2 package was installed):

      Get-Appxpackage *WindowsAppRuntime.1.6* -AllUsers | Where { $_.Version -eq '6000.311.13.0' }

      INSTALL WinAppSDK 1.6.3 THREE TIMES..whaaathe?

Windows - commercial by definition and now function...
