I have a message in Secunia PSI saying that there is an update for Microsoft XML Core Services. I don’t know what this is and when I looked it up on Google, I couldn’t really understand what it does and if I need to have it. I’d appreciate advice regarding this.
Regards, GinaR

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody MVPOctober 7, 2014 at 10:27 am #1470014Secunia PSI is trying to tell you that MSXML 4.x has reached end-of-life. See the “Obsolete” section at MSXML. This means no more updates from Microsoft. Secunia is trying to get you to install a supported version of MSXML. The problem with that is at some time you installed a program that required MSXML 4.x. If that program is still installed it needs MSXML 4.x. So, installing MSXML 6.x will not do any good. It is up to the vendor of the program to upgrade to use MSXML 6.x
There is a way to add an “ignore rule” to Secunia PSI. Look under Settings.

AskWoody LoungerOctober 7, 2014 at 8:04 pm #1470050Thanks for your information re MSXML 4.x and about the “ignore rule” on Secunia PSI. I was able to find this and disable updates for this program. As a not very tech savvy over 70 y.o., I have trouble understanding much of the tech speak regarding computer info and really appreciate the information and help available on this forum.
