I have dial-up because it’s cheap (eight bucks a month). But now I have a problem with W7 SP1 — with a file size measured in dekamegabytes, it’s too big for me to download with a four-hour time limit. Is there some way I can download SP1 to a rental computer with broadband, copy SP1 from that rental computer to a thumb drive, and then install SP1 onto my computer from that thumb drive?

Or do I even need to download SP1 at all? I’m caught up on my Updates (except for the February batch; I’m still waiting Defcon 4).

At some point you’ll need SP1, but for now don’t worry about it…

For a price (about US $10.00) Microsoft will send you a CD containing SP1, which will work on any computer for which the download will work. Identical contents and installation, but from the CD. I always like to stay off line, due to taking down my security programs, whenever I apply a major Service Pack update. (Security needs to be removed in some cases to open System Kernel files to changes.)

It is always a good idea to have an anti virus and keep it up to date.
You can get a good one for free, it is Microsoft Security Essentials.
