    I have- all of a sudden- lost both Internet access and the ability to open my modem icon in the control panel.

      Start | Run, type EVENTVWR and hit Enter. Do you see any warnings (yellow exclamation sign) or errors (red X sign) under Application and System? If so, double-click such events and post the description here, please.
