I had this problem with Win 7 on a friends laptop. I found a program on the Internet to reset the password. I installed it on a flash drive and booted off of it and reset the password. The hardest part was figuring out how to tell the CMOS that I wanted to boot from the flash drive. So much for Windows security.

Yep, that’s the Linux bypass. Works very well, from what I’ve seen.

You can try the sticky keys trick, you will need a windows 10 disc for this to work. Used this trick before on Windows 7 and it worked well. I haven’t used this on Windows 10. The below website walks you through the process, it is under the advanced Windows 10 title in the article.

Another way is to use Microsoft DaRT, previously known as Winternals ERD Commander. I don’t exactly know how this tool can be obtained now, but I think it require some sort of licence which at least some of the specialist computer repairing shops should have.

I’m not 100% on the legality of it all, but Hiren’s Boot CD 15.2 has a password remover in the main menu. It says XP/Vista/7, but I’ve used it on local accounts on 8, 8.1 and 10 as well.

I assume the user has tried just pressing Enter/OK (blank password). Yes, no?

Yes, that’s caught me a few times in the past…

DaRT is part of MDOP (MS Desktop Optimization Pack).

I am no expert, just a lowly Accountant, and am not sure what the result will be and this would be a last resort.
Maybe, remove the hard drive and connect it to another machine as a second drive (not primary). Then you can probably access the drive its files and info.

Not if the new hardware is running Windows. Only Linux bypasses Windows password protections. I dual-boot with Linux, and no Windows Permissions are respected by Linux. It is not evil to take back control of our own computers and our paid for licenses.

There are many bootable CDs that could be used to reset a lost Windows password. The most well-known methods are using Windows install DVD, Offline NT Password & Registry Editor:
