    Hi all,
I just got a cable modem installed. I rebooted [after the installer left-dumb me] and got error messages about the following missing files:
    vnetsup.vxd, vredir.vxd, and dfs.vxd.
The error message says it “cannot find a device file maybe needed to run Windows or a Windows app. The windows registry or system.ini file refers to this device file but the device file no longer exists.” Then it says if I deleted it on purpose try uninstalling the associated application. Or if I want the application try reinstalling.
I get the message for each of the files after which it says to “press any key to continue”. When I do, it boots. However, I get a Windows dialog box that says “unable to load msnp32.dll – the system cannot find the file specified. Some or all of the following feature is not available – Microsoft Network. When I press OK I am at the desktop.
I can use the Internet, but am getting frequent errors “Explorer caused invalid page fault in module msvbvm60.dll”. Most of the time I can continue to use the Internet.
I tried removing the network card installed by the cable company [in device manager] and then rebooting. It finds the device and reinstalls the drivers it finds in Win98. After rebooting I get the same error message. I then uninstalled the card and on rebooting forced it to look at the Driver CD that came with the card. The only file I can point to is an .inf file. It seems to find something then immediately asks for the Win98 CD and installs drivers. The card is a Realtec RTL 8139/810X Family Fast Ethernet NIC.
Device Manager does not show any problems. However when I look at the driver file details for the card I can see the “vredir.vxd” among other files listed. I don’t see the other 2 missing files.
So, does anyone have any ideas? I tried to get the installer back but I was on my lunch hour and decided I would try to figure it out myself. Any ideas would be gratefully appreciated.

    TIA

I never had NN on my desktop before – never needed it. And it could be there now after the installer did whatever he did. I just didn’t notice yesterday. On the Network Neighborhood suggestion:

      • Do you mean click on NN and delete everything – or right-click and then?
      • Are there any negative side-effects of doing this? I especially don’t want to do anything that will affect Outlook .
        [/list]TIA

      Cowboy,
you’re second solution worked like a charm! PC boots successfully now.

      Thanks a bunch! clapping

Now, can I ask a related question? I am still getting frequent Explorer errors “Explorer caused invalid page fault in module msvbvm60.dll”. Most of the time I can continue to use the Internet but it does close the current window. Should I be worried? Do you know what that particular .dll file is for?

      TIA

I can’t help you with a solution; I can only tell you what msvbvm60.dll is: it is the Visual Basic 6 runtime module. It comes with Visual Basic 6 (obviously) and applications written in it, also with Office 2000 and XP, and probably with other apps too. Perhaps the ethernet card installation installed an older version of this dll.

      Cowboy,
Thanks for all the info. I tried clicking on the BHO Cop link in your message but IE won’t let me have more than one window open without crashing. I searched for BHO and all the links take me to PC World Magazine where it says it is no longer available except by subscription.

Also, I do have Norton, but I’m running 5.0 and there isn’t a Script Blocking Option.

I downloaded vbrun60sp5.exe which was supposed to install updated VB run files. Still getting the error message. I’m wondering if a good old clean install is in order? frown

So, do you think it is coincidental that I started having this problem or do you think it has something to do with getting the cable modem question Everything was fine before I got the modem.

I will try uninstalling Norton and see what happens. The reason I’m running 5.0 is because updates are free. So if Norton is the problem, I would be interested in a free AntiVirus program.

Norton’s has nothing to do with “vnetsup.vxd, vredir.vxd, and dfs.vxd” files. They are windows generated based on the hardware and drivers you have installed.

      Cowboy,
i downloaded the new .dll file but can’t figure out how to install it. If I try to copy it to the System folder Windows tells me the file can’t be copied because its in use. Same thing if I try to move it there. question

      Cowboy,
If the drivers I loaded aren’t compatible with Windows, what then?

BTW, I disabled script debugging in IE and am still getting the errors.

      Cowboy,
I looked around at the Toshiba site and they made it sound like I would only need drivers if I was using a USB for the modem . The modem is a Toshiba PCX2200. The box left by the installer had a number on it DAZ8817F. That’s really all I know.

Thanks a bunch. I appreciate your help. smile
