    Hello –

Have a Dell Inspiron Desktop 3000 Series, Model 3647. When I put it in Sleep Mode, the power saver comes on. Is it redundant to turn off the monitor (its light slowly blinks).

    Thank you.

Not fully redundant, there will still be a small trickle of ‘life support’ electricity in Sleep mode.

I don’t know if it’s better these days to give a monitor a daily ‘rest’, or to avoid a daily shock to the circuits caused by the sudden surge at switch-on.

My standing rule on these matters is: Low Power ≠ No Power

      Then I consider:

1). Is it hard to turn a monitor off or on? No
2). Is anyone ever confused by the monitor being off, and thus they are unable to use the computer? No!
3). Does the computer turn on faster than the monitor? Never!

As such I consider it a “no brainer” to turn the monitor off. Nothing bad will happen if you don’t and people often forget. But really, the monitor ought to be off.

I use this rule. Monitor on = computer on. If the computer is sleeping and the monitor light is blinking I know I haven’t turned the PC off.

You probably use up more energy turning a monitor on and off than it uses being left on!

And in this cold weather you derive a minuscule contribution (a fraction of a Watt) to heating the environment – so less spent on the central heating.

There is a well-known legal Latin saying: de minimis non curat lex.
(Rough translation: the law does not concern itself about trifling matters)
