Does anybody in this day and age use a 15” monitor? We use 15” flat panel monitors, which I know has a bigger screen area than equivalent CRT, but at max resolution of 1024 x 768 using SQL Enterprise Manager, Query Analyser and VB is quite frustrating as you have to keep resizing panels.

Am I in the dark ages?

Not at all. The displayable size of 15″ LCD screens are only slightly (about 0.3″) smaller than a 17″ CRT, which is by far the most common size in general use.

The main disadvantage of LCD (as you’ve found out) is the restriction on maximum resolutions compared to a CRT.

I have a 17” flat panel at home and it is a lot more pleasant to use, and they’re relatively cheap these days. I think it would make us more productive. I’m hoping the guy who holds the purse strings in our company agrees…

Yeah, it would make things much better. My original point was, no, you weren’t in the dark ages with your 15″ LCD. Of course, the bigger the better though!

[/indent]Convince him with some facts and figures!

You should be able to find reviews of flat-panel monitors in the monthly UK computer mags (e.g. in next month’s — September 2005 — Personal Computer World (due out 21 July)), and comparative prices for CRT and flat panel screens of the same viewing size from somewhere like Dabs, or similar. Perhaps get him to buy (a decent) one for his own use, so he can see just how wonderful they are, how they require less desk space, enables one to pull more birds — you know, the usual thing to convince the accountant-type mind! The downside is that flat-panel screens are probably still about 20-odd percent dearer than the equivalent CRT… disprove that if you can!

I won the purse string holder of our company over by simply borrowing an LCD screen from my supplier then installing it on her desk. At the end of a week there was no way she was going to give it back. End of any argument! innocent

The standard monitor where I work is a 17″ flat panel monitor. Most of the smaller monitors have been replaced mainly due to screen resolution problems with anything smaller than 17″ when running some of the proprietary applications we use.

If you are going to ask for a monitor upgrade you may as well ask for the new Dell 24″ widescreen http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/Product…04&sku=320-4221%5B/url%5D with a native resolution of 1920×1200 . You will need a minimum 128mb Video Card to run it. You can show that you will be more productive as you can have multiple windows open side by side and get more work done during your stay in the office. It is the best for the price in that size and resolution.

Ooh look! Surprise! We pay more in

Thanks for the advice all. I can’t see my boss going for the 24” Dell flat panel – frankly I would be embarrassed to have such a monstrosity on my desk! I suspect my boss might be a bit wary of all other staff in the office thinking ‘why can’t I have one?’

I haev a flat panel already – its just too small.

In my view, a 15″ LCD is fine, if the eyes of the user are good (maybe great), and if the native resolution is sufficient to run with many standard programs open, viewable, and usable at the same time.

You said you’re using 1024 x 768 – I find that too small (these days) for my daily usage. My previous work issue thinkpad had a 15″ 1600 x 1200 LCD which was wonderful. My replacement thinkpad was downgraded to 1400 x 1050 (bulk purchase). Same measured size, smaller desktop display.

If the eyes can’t read the finer resolutions at 15″ sizes, moving to 17″ or 19″ would be a good idea.

1024 x 768 is the maximum res my monitor will go to – I don’t know if my eyes would be up to a higher res on a 15” screen, but having used a 17” screen at home, it is a whole lot better. They’re under

While trying to see if you could buy that Dell monitor (nearly $1K!) in the UK I found a writeup Why choose {Dell} flat panel displays? which might assist you in assembling arguments.

I don’t think they are going to buy the biggest and best for all the staff, though…!

      John

PS In my previous post it seems I should have read your original post rather better, where you said you already had a 15″ flat panel screen. Ooops!
