Remember, this article is about the web interface @ outlook.com not a specific app.

Since the article specifically mentions Outlook along with Outlook.com I took it as being some merging of things between the two toward more similarity. Although not mentioned I feel it could be leading more toward Office 365 or later and the cloud functions or in other words, more things running from online.

In the summary at the beginning it says: “Microsoft is bringing Outlook.com closer to Outlook/Office 365”.

Later: “Microsoft’s goal is to bring Outlook and Outlook.com closer together so that users feel like there are fewer differences between these two different email products that are both called “Outlook.”

Still later: “Microsoft’s overarching goal is to make it easier for the Outlook.com/Outlook/Exchange team to roll out new features for all variants of Outlook more quickly, going forward.”

Nowhere does it mention changes to the Outlook desktop program. It is all about changing the web mail interface to be closer to the desktop program.
