• Mouse problem?

I have noticed an occasional problem with my mouse cursor. This does NOT happen all of the time, but often enough to be annoying.
When I hover the cursor over and item, instead of a steady explaination box (for want of a better term, I can’t think of the proper name), I get a flashing text box. Sometimes, if I let it hover for a while, it will go steady, others not.
I have reloaded and checked for current mouse drivers. I have tried to adjust the mouse refresh rate, up and down, using a utility and even tried subbing the mouse in desparation. All to no avail. It does to be more prevalent on the Webshots site, (which I use) but as mentioned it will occur in other locations, though not as often.

Any ideas will be appreciated. This is annoying but no big deal. mice

      Bob–

Can you put a snapshot of this textbox up–and what kind of mouse—USB optical cordless?

        SMBP,
The mouse is a HP USB, optical. The screen shot shown is a “good” shot example. When it’s not working, the text box flashes on & off. In this shot the line above was flashing, but I couldn’t get a shot of it because it WAS flashing.

Bob, Seems like either a video card/driver problem or something is using lots of the CPU. What OS? Have you run spyware detection? Is the mouse corded or cordless?

            Hi Joe,
I’m running WinXP Home SP1 & latest hotfixes. Haven’t added anything new since this started. Have run both Spybot & AdAware with latest definitions, all OK. The mouse is a corded type optical wheel mouse.
I just checked the CPU useage, (the cursor is still flashing now) at only 1 to 2 %.
Don’t know about the video card, all other graphic functions appear Ok. Running resolution 1024×768, with 32 bit color. ( I tried 16 bit, no change)
            Strange?

Hi Bob, Have you got the latest drivers for the mouse & video card? Is the mouse PS2 or USB?

              Joe,
Yes, as mentioned above, I do have the latest drivers for mouse and video. The mouse is USB.

Any chance this might have something to do with your unconventional pointer (theme)? You might try and go back to one of the standard ones and see if it helps. Shot in the dark, I know, but weirder things have happened…..

              Kip,
I had thought of that possibility. I don’t honestly remember if I had the problem before that or not, but I think I did, since I’ve used that scheme for some time now. It will be worth a try though, easy to make the change back, so I’ll see what happens and report back.

              Hi Kip,
Well, I went back to the default cursor scheme and lo and behold, I STILL get that flashing text box when hovering on some , not all items?

Bob, Have you checked HP’s support site? Wonder if it could be the sampling rate? Who’s the OEM for the mouse? Is this on a USB hub?

              Hi Joe,

To make the cheese more binding, as I was mousing around, the HP mouse died. Right in my hand, the poor thing expired. Froze up and refused to do anything more, despite my attempts at CPR, it just went where all good mice go?

So, I ran out to the local Staples and picked up another replacement mouse and installed it. Got my mouse back OK and LO and Behold………I STILL have the flashing problem hovering over some things !! censored frown

I now have a Logitech USB Optical wheelmouse, with all the latest drivers, etc, etc. Doing the same thing that the old one did. I suspect the OEM for the old one was also Logitech but not sure.

You mentioned sampling rate? Not sure how you would adjust, check ir change that????

              Bob

            • #687494

Hi Bob, Too bad it bit the big one. I’m not sure about the sampling rate. If it is adjustable it would be a setting in the driver (maybe). You sure it is on a good reflective surface? Is it in a USB hub? Or, is it plugged into a USB port on the PC?

              Joe,
Yes, the mouse services were today. Took it out to the woods out back for the other wild creatures to check out. mouse sigh

Now, with the newcomer, as mentioned, the same results as the other. I have it normally plugged in to a USB hub that is part of a 4 port hub built into the Sony A400 monitor. I have tried it on one of the ports back of the PC. Same-same.

Also usually use a mouse pad for old times sake, but have experimented with other surfaces, smooth, light , dark, etc.
I keep coming back to your idea of the sampling rate? There must be some way to adjust it, but how is the question. I’ll have to chase that for a while, I guess.

              Bob

            • #687546

Bob, Good luck with the sampling rate. I’ve got a MS optical USB Intellimouse that has alwyas worked fine. I also use a mousepad but it is because the mouse is on a desktop with a failry thick piece of glass covering the wood – not consistent reflectivity.

              Joe,
Just an update of sorts. I checked into the sampling rate subject in some depth. Seems that the only types of mice that can be adjusted are PS2 types. They default at 40 hz and can be adjusted up to 200hz. USB types ( which is what I have ) are fixed at 125hz, without any adjustments available. So much for that.

I also sent an email to Logitech tech support and they responded: sorry about your trouble but that’s a system trouble not a mouse trouble, contact Microsoft. End of message. ( Thanks, Logitech. )

I do have to agree somewhat because both the old and new mice (mouses?) responded exactly the same way. That is, before the old one went on it’s way !

            • #687953

              Bob,
Well that is just about typical of most support groups. If they have half a chance to not do anything other than say ‘its not our fault’ that’s the option that will be taken. BTW, do you have someone who could lend you a MS mouse? Just to see if that makes any difference

              Bob….

I’ve got a “cheap” AOpen USB Optical mouse, which I use with a mousepad. The pad, had, shall we say, funky colours and designs on it. Sometimes, when I leave the mouse in just the right spot, I get the flashing effect you discribe.

I’ve noticed the LED is on when this happens.

As soon as I move the mouse, it’s okay again.

Could you be experiencing the same problem???

    • #687492

      Hi Cowboy,
Yep, tried those things among the many other attempts at repair. NG

How about the usb device drivers? Are you running any other usb devices, and are they all ok? How about (if you do have other devices) unplugging them and running the mouse only (ie usb power problem)? Also, you can delete the references to the usb controller in device manager, reboot, and Windows will rebuild the usb drivers. Have you tried that?

To: jkipk, SMBP, Joeperez, Cowboy, & cbaldrey. etal,

I have FINALLY fixed (?) this rotten “flashing” text box problem. The method was kind of extreme and without a positive indication of just WHAT was causing it, but…..desparate times call for desparate measures, as the saying goes.

I concluded that it had to be some kind of corruption of the mouse/ cursor files or a video display problem. SO, this is what I did:

1.Deleted the contents of these folders. Cursors, mouse, prefetch, NVidia.

2.Regedit deleted all references to HP or Logitech mice & Nvidia.

3.Device Manager, uninstalled both mouse & display entries.

4.Rebooted to CD Recovery Console and did a repair reinstall.
