I have just started using Visio version 2.0 (very old, I know).

I am frequently frustrated by it, probably because of my ignorance. The mopst annoying thing so far is my inability to move a master shape text block to a new position. According to Help, this appears to be easy enough: click on Text Tool, click on shape and press F2 to select the text block. The text block should now be surrounded by a green box, with selection handles and you can then move it about, rotate etc. However, the box appears grey and inactive, so it is impossible to move the label. Is this a bug or my stupidity?

Visio 2.0 has to date back to the mid 90’s, and I don’t even have the old manuals any more. When you say a text block, I assume you mean the text block for that shape rather than just a shape that holds text. Which master shape are you dealing with and where are you attempting to do this? Are you actually trying to modify the stencil or just a shape you’ve dropped on a diagram?

        I know it’s old but it’s all I’ve got.
Yes, I mean the label associated with the shape, i.e. that moves with shape. I am usung the Network template and the master is the Server shape. I have tried editing both within drawing and the master itself, via stencil.

If double clicking on that part doesn’t work, you may have to ungroup the shape before you can do what you’re trying to do, and I don’t guarantee that it will work even then. All the pieces of the shapes are actually shapes themselves, and in the later versions, you can drill down to the individual components a little easier. It sounds like you’re trying to create your own custom shape by modifying a built-in one. Copying the shape, ungrouping the copy, moving the textbox and the grouping again may do what you want.

Ungrouping appears to have done the trick, although this forces me to create a new shape because it unlinks from the original. Logical, I suppose, to leave the master as it was.
Thanks for your help. Pity the documentation misses out these vital things but it was ever thus.
