Mozilla is removing the Do Not Track (DNT) setting from the Firefox browser. This change will take effect in version 135 and beyond, where the DNT setting will no longer be available. The change is already live and can be seen in the Nightly version….Mozilla believes that DNT is no longer an effective privacy measure. Many websites ignore the DNT signal. ..

    * I don’t remember a site that says it honors DNT.

I do, but they’ve been very few and very far between.

Therefore, IMHO, this is no big deal that the choice to tell a site not to track you is disappearing.

Besides, in the time since they implemented that little feature/check box choice, they’ve increased FF’s tracking-fighting capabilities significantly with their Enhanced Tracking Protection choices.

It was always intended to be an opt-in feature, and trackers were supposed to respect it based on that. But then Microsoft enabled it by default in Internet Explorer, so the response was to simply ignore it, making it useless.

The Do Not Track specification did not explicitly mandate that the use of Do Not Track actually be a choice until after the feature was implemented in Internet Explorer 10.

On April 3, 2015, Microsoft announced that starting with Windows 10, it would comply with the [new] specification and no longer automatically enable Do Not Track as part of the operating system’s “Express” default settings, but that the company will “provide customers with clear information on how to turn this feature on in the browser settings should they wish to do so”.

Just use the ‘Mozilla Recommended’ EFF Privacy Badger extension with DNT and Global Privacy Control enabled as a comfort going forward..

Mozilla may be laying the groundwork for the feature’s removal already! Or maybe it’s always been that way and I just now noticed it!

Upon looking into about:config, I noticed that the default setting for the preference that either checks the box or unchecks it is set to have the box unchecked, so by default they leave the feature off unless the user goes in and puts a check mark in the box!

The above is in FF 133.0.3.
