I have been using MS Authenticator for a while and haven’t had any issues. I recently was reading about backup – which I have on ICloud.

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/active-directory/user-help/user-help-auth-app-backup-recovery

    This link says:

You can recover your account credentials from your cloud account, but you must first make sure that the account you’re recovering doesn’t exist in the Microsoft Authenticator app. For example, if you’re recovering your personal Microsoft account, you must make sure you don’t have a personal Microsoft account already set up in the authenticator app. This check is important so we can be sure we’re not overwriting or erasing an existing account by mistake.

but it doesn’t tell me how to check if I have an account. I’m having trouble understanding – if I lose my device data or get a new device and want to recover Authenticator – I would still have an Authenticator account, right? Or would I be checking first on the Auth app that my account is not there? I’m confused, again! thanks

On a new phone with a new Authenticator app, you’d see the screen shown immediately below that comment (Add your first account or Begin recovery from backup).

If you had already started doing anything with the same account in the new app on a new phone, your account would be shown instead of that Add first/Begin recovery screen, and you’d be prevented from overwriting that with a backup. It’s to make sure you realize you’re restoring a complete backup.
