AskWoody MVPMay 11, 2020 at 9:30 am #2261389Or, if you’re in a pioneering mood, set Windows Update free, and report back to us if you hit any snags!
It’s always set free ’cause I’m always prepared, and I’ll be sure to report any snags.
Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!We all have our own reasons for doing the things that we do with our systems; we don't need anyone's approval, and we don't all have to do the same things. We were all once "Average Users".1 user thanked author for this post.

ManagerMay 11, 2020 at 9:51 am #2261398There’s an error in the article that’s being changed as we speak. In spite of what I originally said, Win10 version 1809 will reach end of support on November 10. I still recommend that people upgrade to 1903 or 1909 (and I prefer 1909) on their own terms, and not wait to be pushed by Microsoft.

GuestMay 11, 2020 at 11:49 am #2261429I’m on 10/1809 Home so my method of delaying updates is to stay offline with that laptop and await DEFCON3 for May 2020’s KBs. And I’m staying on 10/1809 until Nov 2020 regardless because I’m mostly awaiting some Linux kernel Fix for that laptop that’s arriving with Kernel 5.6 and that will give me an option on 10/1809 to go past that 10 version’s EOL in need be should 10/2004 have some longer term issues that are as problematic as 10 1903’s/1909’s.
I think that by Nov 2020 I can learn enough about 10/2004 RTM to judge that for updating but my long term goal is to always be dual booting Windows with some Linux distro as that’s worked out so good for all my older 7(EOL) laptops and Linux Mint 19.3.
I’m definitely keeping Windows around on all my laptops but really for most of my day to day that may be booted under Linux for the most part while online to avoid EOL(For 7’s Security un-patched) and Telemetry for 10/Home but still have Windows available for anything that Linux does not cover. And I did pay for the 10/Home license via that laptop’s purchase so I’ll get some usage out of 10/home even if that’s more offline than online, save any updating of 10 for monthly/feature updates as needed.

AskWoody LoungerMay 11, 2020 at 11:55 am #2261431It’s largely because of this site that I made upgrading to Pro a priority. I have gpedit set so I have to choose to download an update instead of having it forced.
