GuestJune 6, 2013 at 9:41 am #54531Woody: Win 7 – I have 3 optional updates offered and would like your opinion about installing.
1) Silverlight (KB2636927)
2) MS Pointing Drawing Mouse (No KB #)Do you need a MS mouse for this?
3) Platform update for Windows 7 x64 edition (KB2670838)
Seems this should be more important than an optional update.A MS Security Essentials definition update was offered as an option but I went ahead with that download.
Thanks

GuestJune 6, 2013 at 11:11 am #54532I tried to install IE 10, and the installation failed. Microsoft directed me to support.microsoft.com/kb/2818833, which said I had to first manually install four KB’s. I downloaded all four MSU files. Three of the four KBs, it turned out, were already installed on my computer. The last one was KB 2670838, which I have written down as a KB that you say not to install. So rather than install it, I stopped, and so IE 10 is not installed on my Win7 64-bit SP1 computer.
What do you advise?

AskWoody PlusJune 7, 2013 at 12:06 am #54537Woody,
Thank you for the Defcon 5 notification. After installing these patches, I’ve noticed that there were 14 Microsoft .NET Framework & Client Profile updates installed on the same date…June 5. These were in addition to the listed Windows patches. What are these updates and are they bundled somehow and not identified separately as available updates in Black Tuesday patches?iPhone 13, 2019 iMac(SSD)

AskWoody PlusJune 7, 2013 at 12:24 am #54538Woody, just to clarify my 00:06 comment….when I go to Control Panel>Programs and Features>View installed updates it lists 14 .NET Framework and Client Profile updates for June 5 (I installed the Black Tuesday patches after your notification on June 5). However, in Control Panel>Windows Updates>View installed updates…it only lists the two .NET updates, 2804576 and 2804579 that were in the Black Tues patches. Why the difference? You may not want to post this comment, it’s mainly to explain the 00:06 comment.

GuestJune 8, 2013 at 1:28 am #54542Hi Woody.
KB2847204 and KB2829530 both failed to install for me. However, as these relate to IE8 and IE9 – and I now have IE10 – I assume this is no cause for concern?
Also worth noting that when I check ‘About Internet Explorer’ the ‘Install new versions automatically’ box is ticked. I haven’t noticed this before. Best to untick it, would you say?

GuestJune 8, 2013 at 4:48 am #54543Hi Woody,
Microsoft offers monthly Office 2010 patches along with the Windows updates. My Win7 system has the “Home and Student” version installed, but the offered Office patches often pertain to Office components that are not available in my version of Office(e.g., Outlook and Visio).
Should I ignore these Office patches, or is it possible that the underlying code is already running in my version of Office even if the aforementioned applications are not actually available? And if that’s the case, would my system be vulnerable to Office security issues even if I didn’t install the Outlook and Visio patches?
Hope this is clear — sorry for the long-winded question.
Regards, and thanks again for your great website,
Marty

GuestJune 8, 2013 at 8:09 am #54544Woody, KB 2670838 is not without problems. My small office discovered this week that it was the reason our Olympus dictation program stopped working a few weeks ago. The Olympus program would not open. Someone trying to help us said they saw a lot of ntdll errors. dll errors are above my head to understand. But we uninstalled KB 2670838 and the Olympus program works again.
