It has been a month or two since this problem occurred, but my MS Edge browser will not open when I try to use it. Fortunately, I don’t need it very often. I have tried various methods found on the internet to fix the problem, but so far, none of them has worked, including reinstalling the browser. Any help would be appreciated.

I had this happen on a client computer and it was related to mcafee and triggering a temp profile.  Once I took ownership of the Users folder on the device it opened up.

Have you had any issues with your user account?

Not that I know of. I will have to try what you suggest and see if it works. Thanks.

Well, I had to add take ownership to my context menu, and found out I had to do it to the individual folders inside the Users folder. But I took ownership of each of the folders and tried to run Edge after that. It still won’t start up.It seems there is a momentary flash that tells me it is trying to open, but then nothing happens, and it is not in the running task list of the task manager.

Can you get an Edge InPrivate window by right-clicking the Edge icon on Start menu or Taskbar, then selecting New InPrivate Window? If so, go to …, Settings, Reset settings.

    • #2601339

No, that private window did not open.

Tried a computer restart (not shutdown)?

    • #2601349

I restarted my computer at least once since the Edge problem appeared. The latest restart was for an updated sound device driver, and that update seems to have my sound working correctly now. But nothing I have done, including a restart, has fixed the Edge problem, yet.

I’d suggest trying to repair Edge as follows.

Note: your user must have administrative rights and the PC must be connected to the internet.

        • Press WinKey + I to open settings
        • Select Apps
        • Scroll down the list to Microsoft Edge, click it, and then select Modify
        • Answer Yes to the “Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?” prompt
        • Click the Repair button and follow the displayed steps.

Note: this procedure “shouldn’t” effect your existing Edge personal data and settings.

I have tried this solution before, but I will try it again.

      • #2601386

That solution did not change anything. Edge will not start up normally or in a private window. The process downloaded and reinstalled Edge. By the way, I also have Edge update 1.3.181.5 installed and Webview2 runtime 119.0.2151.44 installed, if either one of those programs would make a difference in these circumstances.

Have you ever installed EdgeDeflecter or MSEdgeRedirect to surpress Edge?
Have you ever installed O&O Shutup or other “Tweaker” type third-party app?
Sometimes uninstalling these type of apps doesn’t do a complete return to the default.

Do you have Win11 Pro? If so, have you made changes to Group Policy? Have you made any Registry changes that would affect Edge?

    • #2601404

I have read about EdgeDeflecter or MSEdgeRedirect, but I don’t remember actually installing them. I could install and then uninstall using IObit uninstaller, which should clean things up completely. I’ve never heard of O&O Shutup, but I use Ultimate Windows Tweaker 5.0 and Winaero Tweaker. I also have Windows 11 Home (x64) Version 22H2 (build 22621.2428) on my computer.

      • #2601407

MSEdgeDeflecter will show up in Control Panes>Programs & Features.

You need to look at the settings in the Tweaker programs. They can be blocking Edge startup. If that’s the case, they make Registry settings that could still block Edge startup even if you reinstall Edge. You will need to turn off any block.

    • #2601430

How about an example of a tweaker program setting that would block Edge.

      • #2601433

I have used O&O Shutup, so I won’t be of any help with the settings in the two tweakers you are using. I also use MSEdgeRedirect, because I don’t want Edge to ever raise it’s head.

But if you are using those two tweakers, you should be aware of what you are using. You should go through the settings in each and see what you are, or are not, blocking. They may not be the cause of your problem, but if you don’t know what the settings are, you will never know if they are at fault.

      Which antivirus is running?

Several others have recent similar issues and the common factor may be Norton 360:

      Microsoft Edge not starting

    • #2601443

I just tried turning off the NAV antivirus and smart firewall, and Edge still did not start. Not sure what else would be preventing it from starting or how to find out.

    • #2601448

Just tried it, and nothing discernible happened. What’s next?

    • #2601493

But Edge was not running weeks before I installed Norton A/V. Should I try to uninstall and reinstall Norton anyway?

    • #2601499

At least it rules this out.

How long has Edge not launched and what was done around that time?  When you go into event viewer, are there any events indicating Edge issues?

I will have to think about that, because I really haven’t kept track of when the problem with Edge started, since I only use it every so often. I typically use firefox, and when it doesn’t work with a particular website, I turn to Chrome, which usually solves any problem that firefox has with a website, since Edge is presently not working.
