Got this email from a friend whom I help whenever she got computer problems. This is clearly a scam because Microsoft will never ask customers to update anything through email & the addressee is from goggle+ I told her to delete away all 10 emails & block the sender. These people are getting very creative

Whoever sent it has done their homework because the grammar is better than most.

Don't take yourself so seriously, no one else does 🙂

The Subject line (with no caps) reads “blocking of your account is been processed” :p

True, although I was referring to the main body.

True, although I was referring to the main body.

The main body also has grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, for example: “discontinue support on your account and security” – what does that mean? “improved, conversations” – obvious misuse of a comma. The hints are in the writing – the confirmation is the source email address.

…discontinue support on your account and security” – really?!

It’s the 10 emails that is the give away.

That and the use of Avast rather than Windows Defender…

I would guess that the AVAST was from Doris Tan when she forwarded it to the OP.

And Microsoft uses a Google Plus account?

That sort of is the kicker isn’t it? As if Microsoft is going to give Avast free advertising OR use their product over Windows Defender. And, of course, 10 identical emails is a dead giveaway too. We don’t seem to be growing a smarter batch of crooks. Which is a good thing.

I was unaware that the “Microsoft account team” was using googleplus email addresses for official Microsoft email!

The lot of you missed it if ‘the addressee is from goggle+’.

Goggle? I recall the tale of a dog named Goggles because it wore goggles when it rode in an open top car wearing goggles, while enjoying the rush of air that dogs love when they stick their heads out of the window of an automobile to scoop all that oxygen or whatever they are getting the rush from. Oddly enough I have seen a lot of reports of scams that use ‘goggle’ instead of ‘google’.

Keep an eye out for that simple switch.

That’s a typo by the original poster. The message is supposedly from googleplus. MS doesn’t send messages like this to anyone.

I didn’t follow the link in the OP, for which I apologize.

For the benefit of all pet shop entrepreneurs racing to the patent office with designer aviator goggles for dogs, in lieu of giving me a cut of the profit I suggest making a donation to the anti-poaching (eggs excepted) charity of their choice.

      Two simple rules
If an email is from your bank or microsoft or another big tech company (apple etc) delete it
If a phone call is from the same people or the tax office or whatever and you do not know the actual caller put the phone down beside you and walk away for ten minutes – on some phone systems their phone is blocked from making calls for several minutes if you do not hang up on them

I used to walk away from an open phone line until I signed up for Nomorobo. As for Spam emails, I always report them via SpamCop. I sometimes copy the spamcop report to the US government where applicable.

When I get a call purporting to be from a financial institution, I usually go to the institution to let them know about the call. All of them have been bogus, and the institution has thanked me for informing them.

    • #1543568

Unfortunately banks do send you email so a blanket delete isn’t workable. The same is true for phone calls – they ring regarding suspicious activity on accounts / cards.

You need to use you own judgement and taking 10 or 15 minutes to think about what actions you should take, if any, is the best way to deal with those emails / calls.

      cheers, Paul

        Hi Paul
My bank ONLY sends e-mails to customers on their e-banking site so any anything that comes in on my other e-mail account is automatically deleted
Likewise only one particular person at my bank will ring me – if she is on holiday the person ringing says this is x calling on behalf of y and asks for me to return the call. They do not provide the number so you either know it or look it up.
        Simple security that works
        Mi

The “From” line says it all: [Mailto: postmaster@googleplus.com]. That is the first thing I always checked whenever I receive a suspicious email asking to click a link in order to update my personal info with regard to an account.

    • #1544010

I’m continually getting these spoof we-mails from various sources ; PayPal is a favourite though I have had numerous ones from various banks (with whom I don’t do business) telling me my account is to be limited/closed. Just had five messages in last two weeks telling me my Apple account is to be closed. Haven’t got an Apple account, never had one, don’t want one.

I do however tend to forward these e-mails (as attachments) to the security department of the appropriate organisation before deleting them completely.
