My husband has been getting an “illegal opration in MSGRV32” error message everyt time he tries to shutdown for the past few weeks. He’s running Win 98 SE on a Pentium III with 256MB memory – I’ve tried searching the MS KB but haven’t been able to find anything that relates to this. Any ideas anyone has would be a big help….

AskWoody LoungerNovember 21, 2001 at 7:27 am #553469I found this at http://www.handyfiles.8m.com/msgrv32.htm – beware, pop-ups abound!
Question: I get a Msgrv32 illegal operation when i shutdown windows, why?
Aswer: Msgrv32 is your primary sound driver, this error happens only in Windows 98 and in conjunction with the CMI8330 adapter and is easily fixed. You can either get the update driver from their Official Home Page. Or do the following;
1. Right click on My Computer
2. Goto Properties
3. Click the Device manager Tab
4. Collapse the Sound video and game controllers option
5. Click on the SB16 Audio Device then click the Properties Button down the bottom
6. In the device usage frame “Untick” the box displaying “Disable in this hardware profile”
7. Reboot. -

AskWoody LoungerNovember 21, 2001 at 5:18 pm #553591Thanks for that info Leif – we followed the instructions as posted but found that the “disable in this hardware profile” was already “unticked” (empty). However, this got us thinking outside of the box, and we decided to leave the audio device as is and disabled the “Creative SB16 Sound Emulation” found under “creative miscellaneous devices” in the device manager list. This did the trick nicely.
No more shutdown problems – at least for today. My husband thanks you as well.
