I came back from summer holiday and ran software update managers on my devices. Oops.

On my laptop (Windows 11 Pro 22H2) the tool is reporting that I need to update Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable (x86), Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable (x64), Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable (x86) and Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable (x64).

It successfully updated the 2015-2022 packages but errors on the 2013 ones. I don’t know if they are leftovers and should be uninstalled, or if I should leave them alone, or if there really is a problem here.

On my desktop (Windows 10 Home 22H2) the tool is reporting both 2015-22 packages, the 2013 (x86) package, and the 2005 (x64) package. Same question, are the older packages really necessary and does it matter that the update manager can’t update them?

Thanks for any insight you can offer

    cheers, T

Which software update managers ? There are no proper update managers.

I suppose it’s a software update assistant not a manager, if we’re being pedantic about it.

UpdateHub, in this case. (I also use Ninite occasionally.)

I wouldn’t use any of the current Update assistants. None is a good as SUmo has been.
Regarding C++ updates. You can skip those. If a software app will require a version not installed it will install/request installation.

Interesting read. I missed that discussion (been on holiday).

But I’m just trying to find out if and why I need multiple versions of the visual C++ packages, the update tool is a side issue.

As far as all those Redistributable packages go, I’ve never had a problem keeping them updated, and I’ve never used a separate updater of any kind.

LONG ago, I noticed that they (the Redistributable packages) always had the same installation date as another piece of non-Microsoft software on my machines. As long as I kept the non-MS program updated using its built-in updater, the Redistributable associated with it was also kept up to date by that program’s built-in updater.

So, good to hear that you got the 2015-2022 Redistributable updated. To update the 2013 package, take a look and see what other program(s) on your computer has/have the same installation date as that Redistributable. Chances are that the one (or one of the ones) that has the same installation date will be the one that installed the 2013 package. Based upon my experience, updating that non-MS program will also update the 2013 Redistributable that your preferred program updating utility wasn’t able to update.

Case in point: I have a Western Digital drive monitoring tool. Every time I update it, that updater also updates the installed Visual C++ 2015-2019 Redistributable that I have.
