MySql install not possible

Hi there
I have been trying to setup my laptop as a dev environment for PHP/MySQL setup for quite a while now, and have hit a serious snag. I cannot install MySql.

The installation runs fine (run as Administrator), and instlal works fine, up to the point where you do the configuration settings. Here, I use my normal setup, and when it is performing the execution of the configuration, it stops at the point where it says – cannot start MySql service. (Win7Prox64)

Please help me!

(I have also received a message this morning in the Windows Message Centre that MariaDB 5.3 has stopped working properly. On looking for what Maria DB is, I find that this is an offshoot of MySql – I have not installed this anywhere.)

I also run an accounting package called Pastel which uses the Pervasive Database engine. I have run both successfully in the past, with no problems….. only I think that MySql was installed first in times past.

FWIW, I use UniformServer as a dev environment if I need MySQL etc. No install required and it is portable too.

Thanks – I will try using Uniform Server – it looks pretty good, especially if it can run off either USB Flash or external drive!

I wonder if this might be the problem…. I get a message in the Windows Action Centre that MariaDB has encountered an error There is no solution, and this does not appear in the Control Panel’s Programmes widget. I have read up a bit about it, and apparently MariaDB is an offshoot of MySql. I have never installed it, so I am at a loss…..

Any further suggestions?
How can I remove this phantom MariaDB?

Does it show up anywhere in the list of installed programs? What MySQL package did you try to install?

It does not show up in the list of installed programmes. I have even used CCleaner to see if there is any record….. none! (Neither MariaDB nor MySql)

I used the same installation file that was used on the production server – mysql-5.5.10-winx64.msi downloaded when that was the latest version. I want to install the same version of MySql in my development environment, so I can be sure that things will work on the server!

First time I have come across this type of problem.

Did you check the services list and the list of processes that you have running? Is MariaDB listed?

Just to be sure, I suggest you visit the MySQL downloads page and download the msi file you’re interested in.

OK – here’s the next steps:

1 – checked and then uninstalled MySql
2 – Downloaded the mysql-5.5.15-winx64.msi installer (later version)
3 – installed – ran fine..
4 – got to the start Service partof the config utility, and it failed once more (same as before)

5 – went to Services, and tried to manually start MySql Service and got the following Error:
Windows could not start the MySql Service on Local COmputer. Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly.

(Oh yes – tried with teh 32bit installer, too, with the same results)

Any further suggestions?

If you check Windows event logs, are there any more specific error messages?

As you discovered, MariaDB is a fully open source fork of MySQL, apparently created by people upset with Oracle. My guess is that some other software you have uses parts of MariaDB for local data storage under another name – perhaps yet another fork!

I know this sounds weird, but I’d try installing MariaDB, then rebooting and uninstalling it. I’ve found that is one way to get round this sort of problem. The full install overwrites the partial install and the uninstall takes out the whole thing.
