I have been given the onerous task of learning MySQL and have 4 months to do it. I do not see it to be too much of a burden but I am looking for a good set of online tutorials and snippets to assist me. Good old Google has brought up some reasonable finds but I am looking for any recommendations from any MySQL users

Which version of MySQL (i.e. community, enterprise, etc.)? If you go to MySQL AB :: Developer Zone you’ll see documentation links on the right for the various release levels. Also, other interesting links.

        Thanks Joe

Spot on. That will keep me quiet for a little while grin

You’re quite welcome Jerry. I doubt that the ‘small’ bit of reading there will keep you quiet for any length of time. grin

      Hello Jerry,

I tried to pick up MySQL about a year and a half ago and, while not difficult, I found it awkward, or that’s what I recall. I was used to SQL Server, and I got frustrated by having to use the DOS-like window. I think someone told me there’s a nicer GUI out there, but never got round to checking it out.

All in all, my journey to MySQL lasted some three evenings, when I had to quit it to do something important.

I come from the actuarial field, but a friend from the computing/programming field insists that MySQL is way “better” than SQL Server (and Access for the case), whatever that means, so when you become more experienced I’d like to know your thoughts.

      Good luck!

        Thanks Diegol

You may see from my profile I am a SQL person more than a MySQL. You may also be aware that I am a sessional lecturer in DB Design primarily using Access as the chosen tool. The University has moved over to open source in a big way as they ( and I tend to agree) that Access 2007 is a step too far and now a power toy.

Teaching classic SQL was very problematic especially in a college environment and it could take about 1.5 hours setting up students to work on their own area. Personally I think SQL is best taught vocationally and not academically.

However, the short and tall of it is this is purely a fiscal decision by me as I have to move with the times. Looking at the introductory documentation, it does look a bit cumbersome but I am going to have a play

[/indent]I’m not quite the right person to judge this move, but I agree too.

Other freeware (not sure if open source) DBMS’s I’ve seen mentioned frequently are SQLite and PostgreSQL. R integrates quite nicely with the former as far as I’ve read. Of course you’re tasked with learning MySQL, but in case you happen to be curious… grin

Is MySQL Essentials of any assistance?
