Need Flash Player 9?

Sometimes when I try to access a video, I get a message like this: “To view this site, you need to have Flash Player 9 or later installed. Click here to get the latest Flash player.” I have Flash Player 10.1 already installed and it seems to generally work. I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling, with no success. This only seems to happen on certain sites, like http://www.pbs.org. How can I get these sites to work?

Many sites use an old version detection script that only checks the first digit of the version number. Now that the version number is two digits, these scripts give nonsensical results. If you don’t mind complaining to the webmaster, I certainly encourage that. But as for a workaround, it could be a challenge…

When I visit the home page at http://www.pbs.org/ in either IE7 or Firefox 3.5, the player loads as expected. Is it possible that you have a very high level of security as your default and ActiveX is blocked for that domain? Or perhaps it is one of the various PBS servers that has a problem and I just didn’t run into it.

The home page viewer works for me as well. This is the site I’m having trouble with:

Sorry for the delay, I was traveling. That one also works for me. If it’s true that you are in Canada, I wonder whether WNET content is blocked from display outside the U.S.? Some sites only serve content to particular geographic areas, but how to confirm one way or the other… hmmm…

Perhaps there are conflicts with more than 1 version of Flash on your PC.

I would use a good uninstaller to uninstall all instances of Adobe Flash that show up in Programs and Feature. I would also uninstall the Adobe download manager. I would get rid of the Adobe Flash add on in IE Tools, Manage Add ons, disable/delete the Adobe Shockwave Flash Player, in FF Tools, Add ons, uninstall the Flash Add on. Once all traces of Flash are gone, reboot, then go directly to the Adobe site and install Adobe Flash version 10.1.53.64 (Be sure to UNCHECK the extra app Adobe will try to get you to install). This will install the latest Flash object in IE. When you open FF to a site with Flash content FF will ask to install the plug in. Do so. Once you are donw, uninstall the Adobe Dowload Manager as this is a terrible and insecure app (see post #7 in This Thread.)
