I downloaded MS Windows8 Consumer Review ISO(64bit) and setup/installed it in Oracle’s VM VirtualBoxv4.1.14 according to instructions Fred Langa had in his article “Step bystep: How to safely test-drive Win8”. I had no problems.

I downloaded MS Windows8Release Preview ISO(64bit) to be installed in Oracle’s VM VirtualBoxv4.1.16. I followed Fred’s instructions to setup/install it in the VM, but eachtime I get a fatal error: “Bootable media not found”. I then burnedthe ISO to disk and tried to installed it from CD/DVD ROM but again I got the samefatal error.

VMLog:

The VM will not boot off the DVD drive: it does not see bootable media in the drive, so first of all, you need to verify if the DVD has been burnt correctly.

The quickest and easiest way to do that is to try to boot the host PC off the DVD. If it boots ok to the Windows 8 installer, reboot the machine without the DVD in the drive.

Before anyone jumps down my throat, just to re-iterate: is critical that you do not install Windows 8 when booting the machine outside the VM booting the host machine off the DVD is just a test of the DVD, not to install it.

If the Host PC does not boot off the DVD, go back to the host OS and burn double check the SHA-1 checksum and re-burn the DVD at a slower speed.

Assuming the PC boots off the DVD, look at your settings in the VM. PAE/NX is required to run the RP (it was not in the CP), but you are not there yet since the DVD won’t boot, so I would expect the issue lies in the attachment of the host drive to the VM. Check you have assigned the host drive to either a SATA or IDE port and selected Passthrough.

Verify that no other VM (the Win8 CP for example?) is using the host DVD drive: it can’t be connected to two different VM’s at the same time.

An alternative to the DVD route is to store the ISO somewhere and mount that location as a host based ISO in your VM storage options. That completely rules out the DVD issue.

A second alternative is to dual boot the host PC, but since you asked specifically about VirtualBox I won’t explore the dual boot route any further.

Thanks for your reply.

I think that I have miss communicated my problem and intent. I am wanting to setup/install Win8 RP ISO thru the VM from a folder on my hard drive, not by DVD. It’s the fatal error msg (Bootable media not found) that is causing the misconception that I am trying to in setup/install using CD/DVD ROM. That’s not the case. Only after repeated attempts to setup/install the ISO from a folder on my hard drive that I tried using CD/DVD ROM after buring the ISO to a DVD and trying, but with the same fatal error msg.

thanks and regards

Only after repeated attempts to setup/install the ISO from a folder on my hard drive….

Thats what I’ve been trying to do. BUT the fatal error msg is “Bootable media not found”.

thanks and regards

LaTech,

does your VirtualBox configuration look like this?

31228-VirtualBox-ISO-connection

In the top right, I have clicked the disk icon and navigated to where the ISO is stored as can be seen in the highlighted path below it and to the left. I’ve also selected the Live CD option.

I’ve attached the virtual hard drive to the SATA port and the ISO to the master IDE port. After installation, I then disconnect the ISO from the IDE port and connect the host DVD drive in passthrough.

To All that replied to my request for help, I want to thank for the help. I was able to get Win8 RP installed in the VM. I am not quite sure how I did it but the settings are very simliar to what Tinto Tech last posted. Again thanks to all.
regards,
