I need help recovering my forgotten Linksys router password for wireless access.

    Thank you,

      SouthieGuy,

You can download my CMsLocalPCInfo powershell program. Unzip and run it from PowerShell as admin. It will show you your Wi-Fi passwords.

        RG,

Pardon my ignorance, but having downloaded the zipped file and unzipped it, and having started Powershell as Admin, how do I point the the 2 together so that the command will execute the PS1 command?

The default login ID and password should be on the bottom or back of the case.  If you do a hard reset, it will be restored to default.

Once you log in, you can change both if you wish.

Powershell as Admin, how do I point the the 2 together so that the command will execute the PS1 command?

I opened the Powershell ISE (X86) version as Admin and used File> Open (or the file folder open) and File> Run (or the Play Button).

        Open WindowsPowershell (not WindowsPowerShell ISE).
Cd to the directory where you unzipped the files.
        Type these commands:

        Set-ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned -force

        .\CMSLocalPcInfo.ps1

Note: you may have to visit the properties for the .ps1 file and make sure it doesn’t have the mark of the internte on the file. If so just click the UnBlock button.

      (not WindowsPowerShell ISE).

Just sharing that it did work that way and it did give me my WIFI PW.

RG, it appears to me your script is merely ferreting out the passwords of past connections saved by his laptop’s Windows installation. Perhaps I misunderstood southieguy’s inquiry, but I thought his computer does not have the wifi password saved. If it did, then it would presumably be able to connect without him having to reenter that password. If southieguy’s laptop has not previously connected to this wifi (or has but didn’t save the credentials), what will RG’s script reveal?

If southieguy has access to another computer that has successfully connected to the wifi in the past, then running RG’s script on that other computer should help reveal the password that he can then take back to his laptop. Otherwise, I’m not sure the script is going to reveal anything.

I read post #1 as the router has a wifi password set, but the laptop does not have it saved. That’s the way bbearren seems to be reading it, too. His resolution is to factory reset the router to its defaults, then login to the router and setup the router and wifi anew.

Before resorting to bbearren’s solution, though, if southieguy knows his router’s admin login credentials (which are separate from the wifi credentials, and may even be printed on a label on the router), he could login to the router’s settings (via ethernet) and he should be able to look at or adjust the router’s wifi settings directly.

If he can’t get into the router’s settings, though, then bbearren’s brute force remedy would be the next best way to go.

Thank you all for your help.  I finally went the bbearren route and all is well.

I think you are correct dg1261. Using Retired Geek’s script returned a past router password that didn’t work when I tried to use it. All of his helpful comments, along with pl1’s, taught me things about Powershell that should help me in the future.
