Need simple remote access

I need to help a friend across the Atlantic. She is pretty much a very basic pc user, her system is Vista. What I am looking for is a remote access tool that can be run without her having to alter anything in her modem/router, or complicated settings in her end of the connection. It also needs to be free. What are the best recommendations around?

I would second Jerry’s suggestion and provide an additional suggestion: for you, download the full version, but for your friend, I recommend the Quick Support version – it’s just an executable that doesn’t require installation. She can execute it every time she needs your help and that’s it.

A third vote for TeamViewer, in my experience it’s the easiest to setup and least likely to cause problems afterwards.

As with any remote access software, ensure all security updates are applied to any computer that runs it as a Service or at boot (the Quick Support version should avoid this).

I have used CrossLoop for Remote Access, which also has to be installed each end. When installing and starting up, ignore all the stuff about “experts” and creating accounts and the like. She would have to give you a magic 12-digit passcode within a fairly short time, so it would cost a phone call (or a Skype session!).

I have used Team Viewer from NY to Florida, but never tried across the Atlantic. Should work though. It is very easy to use. The remote PC would sign on, you sign on, she gives you her Partner ID number, choose connect to partner, she tells you her PW, you enter it and voila, you will be on her desktop, running her PC from within your PC.

TV works fine over 8-12,000 miles, in my use. Not had to fix any contact’s PCs on the moon yet.
