“The driver detected a controller error on DeviceHarddisk2D. ”

I have started getting a bunch of these messages in the last 2 days.

I have 3 rotating hard drives and one SSD labeled “Disk 0” through “Disk 3” in the Disk Management section of the Computer Management app in Windows XP.

How do I tell which disk “Harddisk2D” refers to? Is it the disk listed as disk number 2 (which would an HDS 1TB) or the disk that is physically number 2 but labeled “Disk 1” ( a Seagate 300GB model).

Yes, that should be correct. You can also confirm it in the BIOS by matching the Seagate ST number, or other serial it provides.

Run these commands in a Command Prompt window to see the disks information as Windows sees it.
      wmic diskdrive list > c:disk.txt
      notepad c:disk.txt

      cheers, Paul

Thanks. But that output is pretty hard to read.

Is “HARDDISK2” in the error msg the same as “physicaldrive2” in the above? That would make the problem drive the Hitachi 1TB unit.

I added a few judicious carriage returns to the above, and put it in Courier font. It’s a bit easier to read:

Sorry that I don’t have a more complete answer than that.

Each paragraph above lists two drives; it appears that the first item in each paragraph is numbered 0, 1, 2, or 3; and the 2nd item in each paragraph is numbered as 1, 2, 3, or 4.

I’m guessing that the 0/1/2/3 numbers refer to what you said: I have 3 rotating hard drives and one SSD labeled “Disk 0” through “Disk 3” in the Disk Management section of the Computer Management app in Windows XP.

If this is correct, then the first list therefore shows the drives listed as 3rd / 4th / 2nd / 1st; and the second list shows the drives listed as 4th / 3rd / 1st / 2nd.

In other words, the two sets of numbers don’t correspond.

Trying to get an absolute ID on the problem hard drive is driving me crazy! I have been doing a lot of Googling and link following, finally coming up with something that sound sensible.

        Found this forum entry:

Won’t the diskpart.exe command already included in Windows show the
index numbering of the hard disks?

        diskpart.exe
        list disk
        select disk
        detail disk
        exit

        http://www.techtalkz.com/windows-help/90532-need-help-locating-disk.html
        ============

So I ran the Diskpart command sequence above and got this output:
        ============
        C:>diskpart
        Microsoft DiskPart version 5.1.3565

        DISKPART> list disk

Disk ### Status Size Free Dyn Gpt
        ——– ———- ——- ——- — —
        Disk 0 Online 77 GB 0 B
        Disk 1 Online 298 GB 0 B
        Disk 2 Online 932 GB 0 B
        Disk 3 Online 56 GB 0 B

        DISKPART> select disk 2

Disk 2 is now the selected disk.

        DISKPART> detail disk

        Hitachi HDS721010CLA332
        Disk ID: ABD16965
        Type : IDE
        Bus : 1
        Target : 1
        LUN ID : 0

Volume ### Ltr Label Fs Type Size Status Info
        ———- — ———– —– ———- ——- ——— ——–
        Volume 4 N HDS1TB_S1 NTFS Partition 31 GB Healthy
        Volume 5 I I_H1TB_Misc NTFS Partition 15 GB Healthy
        Volume 6 V HDS1TB_S2 NTFS Partition 864 GB Healthy
        Volume 7 G G_1TB_ENCYP NTFS Partition 22 GB Healthy
        ================

Which would appear to indicate that DISK2 is the 932GB drive (which is the Hitachi 1TB)!

Now, this is the 2nd of these drives that I own. I brought them both together and have had to exchange the first one due to errors on it. SO it is possible that both drives came from a bad batch. I guess I will try to set up an exchange under warranty and see if that resolves the issue.

I realise this was a week ago, but my curiosity about wmic found me this on XP (amongst other details):
try wmic¶ from the command line, to get the wmic prompt: wmic:rootcli> , then
          >diskdrive list /? shows the options, and
          >diskdrive list brief summarises the drives on a reasonably short line (per drive), producing (in my case):

          Code:
          Caption DeviceID Model Partitions Size
          HDT722516DLA380 \.PHYSICALDRIVE1 HDT722516DLA380 2 164694781440
          Maxtor 7Y250P0 \.PHYSICALDRIVE0 Maxtor 7Y250P0 1 250994419200
          WDC WD1600JS-60NCB1 \.PHYSICALDRIVE2 WDC WD1600JS-60NCB1 4 160039272960

Hope that helps someone! (and wow – is it hard to get plain text formatted in a fixed font – what happened to wysiwyg?)

Make sure when returning you do not leave sensitive data on the drive.

The hard drive monitoring application “Hard Disk Sentinel” may provide a better view of all your hard drives, names, & numerical designations in a much simpler layout.

Had not heard of this product. But the trial version is pretty limited ( http://www.hdsentinel.com/store.php ) and I don’t want to buy a version at $23 minimum.

        But thanks anyway.

    • #1374916

The trial works fine as intended. A purchase is not needed.

    • #1376273

Thank you as well, that works beautifully.
