Need to improve connection in a nonwired house

Hi all,

I look after a 6 storey building that I am not allowed to hard-wire with ethernet cabling.

I use 200mbps Powerline adapters to route from the main house router (8mbps connection only) in the basement to local gigabit switches in two rooms and to wireless repeaters on the other floors.

Any ideas on how to wring the maximum mbps out of the connection, and minimse the regular hiccups they get over the Powerlines/WLAN?
At times the speed as measured by speedtest.net is only just 1-2 mbps.

Hi DK, the first thing to do is to ensure each pc is using the correct 31234-MTU

Thanks roderunner. I’ll do some tests on the MTU, it’s not something I’ve paid attention to before as I didn’t realise it could have a large effect.

I think the big question is whether the powerline and the WLAN are really the cause for the 1-2 mbps. Have you measured the speed internally, at those times? Isn’t the internet connection really the limiting factor? 8 Mbit/s is really not much, these days. If there are many people accessing the internet at the same time, 2 MBit/s doesn’t look too bad, if you started from 8 Mbit/s.

I’m not sure if it’s just the connection speed. 8mbps is the max I can get here as it’s not close to an exchange – it’s UK ADSL from Virgin.

I’ll do some speed tests straight off the router and see if that is different to how it is behind the Powerlines/WLAN. Thanks for the prompt to try that.

Try using speedtester.bt.com as that gives more information than a basic speedtest.
