Nero or EasyCD?

My home PC is from the dark ages – well Win 98 gold anyway – and I’ve only just fitted a (second-hand) CD writer to it. The install disk includes Nero v5.5. At work I have used Easy CD 5 (basic).

My initial impressions are that Easy CD is ‘better’, i.e more friendly/easier to use, than Nero 5.5 but maybe it it’s just cosmetic, the Nero interface isn’t nearly as slick as Easy CD. I’m tempted to go and buy a copy of Easy CD for my home use but before I do anyone care to offer their ?

Back when I used EasyCD it was a nightmare of creating bad CDs. However, that was quite a number of versions ago. You might want to Google up some articles that might be fair in their assessment of the two products. Here’s just one: The Naked PC Newsletter. I am a little biased toward Nero now, but as I said my Roxio experience is pretty old. I am not a heavy-duty CD burner!

If you do stick with Nero, be sure to check their website for any upgrades you may be entitled to. I don’t know if 5.5 carries any, but v.6 certainly did when I loaded it. BTW, I like Nero myself and have just started using it for burning DVDs. I think some others I’ve seen might be a bit more flexible in terms of long filenames and deep folder structures, but I’m unsure of details.

If the copy of Nero you have works OK and you can adjust to the interface differences stick with it. Be aware that it is not the most current version and is an OEM version likely to not have all the features that you’d get if you bought retail or from Nero. Often, you can get an inexpensive upgrade to the most current from the vendor. See Nero [Nero 5.5].

We use EasyCD and have been happy with it since version 6. Currently we are using either 7 or 7.5 on the different machines. This program does a lot more than what we need as we are not into the “Ripping” game of music and movies.

EasyCD v1 was horrible… Nero was pretty good, so I started with Nero and never looked back. I imagine that you’ll learn the interface quickly enough and I would just stick with what you have.

I have had the same experience with Roxio EasyCD Writer….. BAD and have used Nero for years with more than satisfactory results. FYI, the latest and last update to the 5.5xxx series is 5.5.10.56, which as has already been mentioned can be downloaded as a FREE update from the Nero website.

However, if you are wanting a copy of the new 6.6xxxx series, you can buy an OEM CD for nearly nothing here: SoftwareOutlet.com and type “Nero” in the Search field in the upper left corner.

BTW…… use Nero Express for the easiest GUI.

Looks like the Nero camp has the lead by a small margin so, for now, I’ll stick with the no cash option of Nero 5.5 + the update.

I’m surprised so many people are reporting problems with the Roxio product. Of course, I’ve used EasyCD Creator, so I don’t know if I’m talking about the same product at all. I’ve never had any problems with EasyCD Creator, and I’ve been using it for years. Never tried Nero, and I’ve always used the purchased version of EasyCD Creator.

My first negative experiences with EasyCD Creator (both as Adaptec and Roxio) were back a few years ago when I worked at the educational television network. We, in the Distance Learning Division, burned many CDs for distribution to schools, teachers and students. Bad “coaster” problems were rampant and the major workarounds I remember we used were slowing down the burn speeds and being very careful to buy TOP quality blank disks. We used to think that old buffer problem would be taken care of when new burners started coming out with builtin protection, but that (mostly) didn’t help either. Sometime after I left, I learned that the group had switched to Nero and wasn’t having any more significant problems. So, I too have been a Nero user ever since – here at home.

Everyone I know that is running EasyCD Creator had problems with the early 5.0 version and Windows XP. I think version 5.5 was released and fixed the problems, I was running a 4.? version and did not have any problems, then we went to version 6.0 and now up to 7.5

I’ve been using Nero 6 (with updates) for many months, and find it far superior to ECDC. I foolishly bought ECDC 6 (figuring they’d solved the “won’t work in XP” problem that v.5 had), and found that it wouldn’t copy CDs — it just hung at 4%. It didn’t seem to matter what burner I used. Incidentally, it was fully “patched.” Tried it on several machines (figuring the chipset might be the problem), and got the same results. A total waste of almost fifty bucks… So, I went back to Nero, and have been a happy burner since then.

From my experience on this, it depends on the comfort level of the user and the type of task you’re planning to use it for most.

If the user is relatively savvy and you plan do to mostly file or music CD/DVD creation, I would highly recommend Nero. I use the latest Nero and really love it! It burns VERY efficiently, especially with my Plextor 16x DVD writer. It also lets you control the nuts and bolts of the burn process.

Roxio is targeted more at the less-savvy users. It’s very (VERY) easy to use – almost too simplistic for those of us who want to control every aspect of the burning process. The biggest benefit I’ve noticed is that the Video editing tool gives MUCH more functionality over the Nero equivalent. If you plan to do a lot of video creation and editing, get Roxio (or some other 3rd-party video editing software).

I’ve never created a coaster with Nero and my Plextor 716 drive.
