    Greetings

I have not posted in the Lounge for some time, so apologies if this is not the correct place.

Following the recent Patch Tuesday updates I am left with three dotNET4 updates which won’t install.

    They are: KB2804576; KB2835393 and KB2840628.

    1. All three failed installs resulted in the Error Code: 0000066A.
    2. This led to downloading and running MS Fixit.
    3. This produced one Error Code [0x80070005].
    4. From a quick Google search, the consensus was: Try to repair the dotNet4 Client Profile.
    5. Repair failed.
    6. Downloaded each of the updates and tried to install individually.
    7. Same result – failure to install.
    8. Consulted a friend who suggested creating a Restore Point and re-installing the dotNET4 Client Profile.
    9. Downloaded the file “dotNetFx40_Client_x86_64” (Standalone Installer). Created Restore Point.
    10. Installed this application.
    11. Repeated step 6.
    12. Same result – failure to install.
    13. System Restored.
    14. BTW, the Control Panel list of programs refers only to “Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile”.
    15. O/S is Win7 Pro x64.
    16. A zipped picture archive of all relevant steps is available (1.2Mb).

I am finding this matter to be thoroughly vexing and would greatly appreciate assistance.

Try completely uninstalling all versions of .Net and then install .net4. Then try Windows Update again.

Thanks Jerry, I appreciate your response.
After posting, it did occur to me to try and uninstall .NET 4 (it being the only version on my system – according to the list of programs in Control Panel Add/Remove).
Are there other versions hiding somewhere else ?
        The attempted uninstall failed.
I attach a text copy of the Log file which shows the result of (1) another attempt to install the problem updates and, (2) the result of the attempted uninstall.
        I hope this helps.
        Thanks.

You definitely have a corrupted .net. You should see both Microsoft .net framework 4 client profile and Microsoft .net Framework 4 Extended in Control Panel Add/Remove. Try the .NET Framework Cleanup Tool :

      I obtained this and used it successfully;
      then installed the .Net 4 Framework (Standalone Installer) without a problem;
then installed each of the “problem” .Net updates. All installed OK.

Later this same day there were six further .Net updates downloaded and installed without a problem.

The list of programs contained in: [Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > Uninstall or Change] now refers to (1): Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile, and (2): Microsoft .net Framework 4 Extended.

Thank you again Jerry for your assistance, it is greatly appreciated.
BTW, is there some other way that I can thank you so that other Loungers may know ?

There’s a ‘Thanks’ link at bottom left of each persons post – just click the one on Jerry’s. You can see how many thanks a person’s had under their name on the left hand side – “Thanked 0 times in 0 posts” is yours (unsurprisingly as you’ve not made many posts), Jerry’s is 298 in 272.

Thanks, you relieved my mind that both listings are listed as “Microsoft Net …”
Prior to the last batch of updates, one started Microsoft… and the other “Net…”
Confusing ? Yea think ? But then I remembered who I was dealing with, and it seemed perfectly natural.

Now does anyone understand why my list of “critical updates” at Windows Update included a few for Net Framework 2 and 3. When I don’t have anything but “4” on my Win_7_P_64b system ? Golly was I nervous when I saw those on the list, but I figured “they” must know what they are doing ?

      Roger that.
I see the link on your post, which I have clicked.
Unfortunately this link appears no longer to be available on any of Jerry’s previous posts.
Do I understand this correctly ?
As I have neglected to click this link on any of his previous posts I am now unable to do so ?
      Apologies for my ignorance.

Susan Bradley in the paid content of this week’s Windows Secrets Newsletter addresses this and a few other .NET patching issues. Woody Leonhard in his own Askwoody.com blog and at Infoworld Tech Watch, also details some of these .NET patching issues. There are references in all those sources to how to fix problems with these and a few other MS Updates patches from the July 2013 crop.
