Although Edge itself has gone up by a minuscule amount, IE 11 went down by more than Edge. All hail Chrome.

I’ve used Chrome as my daily driver at work for a long time. (Years.) I’ve always been aware, even without proof, that Chrome is going to be watching. I mean, I’m the product, right? Outside of work I prefer Safari and have been trying Duck Duck Go as my personal search engine of choice for a couple weeks.

What really pushed me away from Chrome recently was so simple as to sound silly. I was troubleshooting a website issue and opened the site in Firefox and Chrome side-by-side. Before even looking into the problem I noticed that I could read easier in Firefox. I tilted my head, moved close, looked back and forth at the same page in both browsers and … whoa. There was crisp, contrasty text! (Win 10.1803, latest Chrome and Firefox, Apple Cinema Display 2560 x 1440 150% scaling, 44 year old eyes.)

Chrome and Firefox are so functionally similar for my use that it was the text rendering that made me switch. The potential that Firefox isn’t as snoopy is icing on the work-related cake.

If you really want to see how much snooping is going on, install the NoScript add-on for Firefox. Now as you surf to any website, click the NoScript button in the upper right of your browser window – you will see a list of websites which are trying to run scripts. You will also be able to easily allow or block whatever scripts you want. You will soon find that 99.9% of all websites are running some sort of Google scripts silently in the background.

MrJimPhelps, I’ve been using Ghostery for years but I’m seeing a lot of people like you recommending NoScript recently. I’m just wondering if you have an opinion on one vs. the other. Ghostery seems to work pretty well but I’m thinking of giving NoScript a try. Thanks.

Yeah I’m butting in

NoScript gives you granularity like a well coded firewall, soon after using in its state of default denial you learn exactly what other domains you need to enable. Excellent sites like Woody’s here only need the root domain and at least one other, others are so needy they want everything from all over the Internet.  (Sometimes the malfunctioning site is just broken and even allowing all domains, nothing will work though.) I have also experienced some false alarms with NoScript’s Clickjacking detection, but it has been far more helpful than the frustration.

Sorry, I have no experience with Ghostery. uBlock Origin is for mostly automatic wide spectrum blocking, uMatrix is another add-on to explore, it is for advanced users.

(Still) using it on the android tablet and it’s the dumbest thing, I’ve ever come across…

And on pc? Looking forward to be in the exclusive little 1% club clinging on to IE11! 😀
