I have a frontdoor/Backdoor Access database. The backdoor is running on an XP Pro workstation and the frontdoor machines are Win2000. Although the database has been split for some time, I have been doing all the form creation and editing on the same workstation that the backdoor is on and everything worked fine. Today I put the frontdoor files on the 2000 workstations and linked the tables to the backdoor. Still everything worked fine. Now for some reason, if I try to run the program on the 2000 workstations, I get the following error: “The Microsoft Jet engine cannot open the file Data_2005.mdb. It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data.” I

Have you applied user-level security to the databases (more commonly called frontend and backend)?

I do have user level security on the frontdoor but it has been there all along. The is no security on the backdoor database. I am admin on all machines and have admin rights to all tables, queries and forms on the frontdoor. I hope that helps you help me.

In the folder your backend resides in, is there an errant lockfile? (Data_2005.ldb)?

Are you usung the same workgroup file (.mdw) on the backend machine as on the frontend machines? If not, copy the secured .mdw from the backend to the frontends, and join it there, using the Workgroup Administrator application.

There is no locked database file on the backend. and “mdw” file is the same on both ends

Are you absolutely sure that the users on the frontend machines have full permissions to the folder containing the backend database? This is required for Access to operate correctly.

Are you absolutely sure that the old frontend database stored on the backend machine still works correctly? Can you relink the tables successfully there?

The FE / BE works fine on the XP Pro workstation, but do the 2000 workstations have all the read/write etc permissions on the XP Pro workstations?

I just deleted and re-linked the old tables from the frontend database that is on the XP Pro workstation. They linked back up just fine and are accessing the backend without a problem. I personally have every access right on both the XP and 2000 workstations I am working with. The usernames and passwords are the same on both machines.

Can you relink the tables in the frontend on the XP machine using a UNC network path instead of a local path? If so, does this version of the frontend work when copied to a Win2000 machine (you shouldn’t have to relink)?

If you create a small new database on the XP machine with one dummy table, can you link to that from a database on a Win2000 machine?

How do I find out the version of MSJet I have?

Search your hard drive for MSJet40.dll, right click file, click properties, click on version tab. Version should be 4.0.8618.0 on the Windows 2000 machines.

That is the correct version on the w2000 machine

When you say it worked, was that because you linked using the UNC path rather than a local path?
