I have been trying to set up an ex-office computer that ran on a network for use at home with a dialup modem connection.

The machine connects as expected and for the first 2 minutes or so works as well as my own machine over the same phone line. The internet connection of the ex-network machine then slows to a crawl, so slow it is unusable. I have tried it with 3 different ISP’s with the same result.

Could the network settings left over from when it was connected to the office network be affecting things? Would welcome suggestions!

If it works fine for a short period it is unlikely that it is left over network settings. What else is running when the slow down happens? What service pack level is running? Is the machine up-to-date with patches? If not, is automatic updates set to automatically download fixes. Even though this is done in the background there will be overhead.

Just as a matter of interest, what is the Temporary Internet Files size set to? If it was used for business and not expected to be used for caching internet graphics etc, it may have been set at something quite minimal.

Thanks for the suggestions, some more things to try.
