All laptop parts are part of the battery, to replace it, replace the whole laptop. I bet microsoft will even give you a discount on the 2018 surface. (5% off?)

Remember that I questioned whether their device strategy was going to carry them through the destruction of Windows? It was not an uninformed guess, based on their competence to date.

Not wishing to sound uncharitable, but given the history and poor reputation of previous products in this line from MS, perhaps it could be argued that people deserve problems if they carry on making the same mistake in buying it.

According to Ifixit, the Surface Pro 5 is a little bit better than the Surface (but not much better) on repairability. They rate it a 1 out of 10 for repairability. Some nuggets from the Surface Pro 5 teardown:
* Replacement of any part requires removal of the display assembly, an easy part to damage.
* Adhesive holds many components in place, including the display and battery.
* The SSD is no longer replaceable.

Yes– but “difficult to repair” is not the same as “impossible to repair.”  An expensive piece of hardware like this needs to be repairable, especially since the battery (and to a lesser degree, the SSD) is a consumable item.  It may be expensive and risky (which would be the responsibility of the repairer, which just adds to the “expensive”), but at least it can be done.  The $1000 to $2200 disposable laptop is another level in cynicism, and the fact that MS would print a warning that batteries need to be replaced eventually on one Surface product even as they release another one, a premium-priced laptop where they’ve effectively locked out possibility… well, it’s not great.

So here’s a question, suppose your brand new Surface enters some sort of catatonic state, and suppose your under warranty (extended or otherwise) and you have really important stuff on there or as M$ likes to put it “That all important presentation” what happens?
Do you get a new one off the shelf with apologies?
Do they get a blank one off the shelf and they “image” it for you?
Do they argue that in some way you have abused it and its really your fault? (hey trust me seen that before)
Its obvious the thing is eminently irreperable involving a skill level that would’nt look out of place off “Star Trek”
It would be interesting to see what does happen as pretty much M$ has tacitly admitted that there’s ongoing problems with the product line.
Sorry M$ not really a candidate for the “ole xmas stocking” should ever “lappy” renewal day come around 🙁

You probably get one off the shelf (replacement) if in warranty.
No image. It was your responsibility to backup your data/image your product.

I’ve seen that too often.

If Microsoft was smart, they would sell these disposable laptops for $200 to $300, with an optional backup plan for perhaps $10 per month, which would keep a current backup image of your Surface.

Then, if it breaks, they could give you a new one with your image on it, allowing you to hardly miss a beat. Or, if it’s out of warranty, they could sell you another one for $200 to $300 with your image on it.

I doubt they would lose money, but they might not make much. But this approach would be extremely popular with the customer base and would go a long way to restoring some good will for Microsoft.

Two quotes come to mind …

I chose this quote, because I think it represents what is happening with these Surface Pros. The uninformed buyer who believes that a high price represents top quality, longevity and first class service. Fools are easy to reel in. Respect is earned.

2. “Image is everything” – Andre Agassi.

I chose this quote because it is all about deception. Here we have Microsoft’s flagship Windows 10 on its own flagship hardware – The image of power and presence.

The Surface Pro has quality and design issues yet it is promoted as a world class performer. In comparison, Agassi who portrayed himself as a world class athlete, wore a wig to disguise the fact that he was losing his hair. He hated tennis but earned millions on the pro tennis circuit. He used crystal methamphetamine during his career and his drug tests were overlooked (he was awarded an Olympic Gold in 1996). His ‘Image’ was pure deception. Once he dropped the deception he emerged as a genuine force to be reckoned with.
