My old computer got me from an upgrade to the brand new Windows 10, however many years ago that was, to about 6 weeks ago when it died. I got a new one from the local independent repair shop I use and had them install Windows 10 Professional. I have backups of my program set up files and data, and files telling me how I tweaked  those programs. As you can imagine, I did a lot of customizing of Windows and the software I use over the years I had that old computer, and some of the tweaks I want on the new computer, a Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 2.

If I need to break these up into separate requests for help, I will certainly do that.

#1–The old computer’s F2 key would let you rename the file you had highlighted. For example: joyride.exe was the original name. If I clicked F2, “joyride” was highlighted and I could rename that without losing the extension. On the new computer, I want to program the F12 key (user defined function) to do that. Is that posssible? I can do it the usual way, but with tremor that is getting worse, it’s easier to use a function key than to right-lick and then try to get the cursor on “rename”.

#2–On the old computer I could set window sizes and locations, and when I closed the window and reopened it, or when I shut down the computer–not hibernate or sleep–and turned it back on and reopened those programs, the windows would reopen exactly where and like I last closed them. I have an old note I wrote myself that says Winaero Tweaker does this. I downloaded the program and can’t find that tweak in the current version. I’ve searched for solutions, but what I’ve found seem to be for the current session only.

#3–On the old computer I had the taskbar locked so the icons stayed in the same order. I can’t find any notes on how I did this. It seems to me that it should be available–blind users d0n’t want things moving that they didn’t initiate.

#4–Starting with Windows 3.1 and all the Windows versions since, I’ve had the Downloads and My Documents folders at C:\Data\Downloads and C:\Data\My Documents. I no longer remember how to tell Windows to use those 2 folders as the defaults instead of the ones at C:\Users\ etc.

Thank you all for your help!

      1# Winaero Tweaker 1.40
Behaviour section/ Redefine Extra Keys on Keyboard? although no mention of Function Keys, perhaps another key?

      2# In Winaero Tweaker 1.40
Just looked in Win8.1 and 10 and those tweaks aren’t available, may only be applicable to Win7 and unavailable thereafter..
You could thry these methods to suit: TheWindowsClub

#3 Just drag and drop taskbar icons in the order you wish in the taskbar. (mouse left click, hold down button and move the icon)

#4 Within File Explorer, right click existing shortcut for each:
Downloads and My Documents then navigate to the location tab and change the location path to wherever you want.

Windows - commercial by definition and now function...

Thank you for a speedy reply.

#1: I got this answered by a local friend, so that’s solved.

#2: I’m still trying the Windows Club suggestions.

#3: Locking the taskbar on my computer doesn’t lock the icon order. All it takes is a tremor that right clicks an icon and I can drag it anwhere on the taskbar.

#4. That worked perfectly. I’ve written it down and added it to my list of “set up tricks for new installation of Windows.”

I tried all the suggestions in that Windows Club video and “Restore previous folder windows at logon” was the one I was looking for. Thank you again for your help. I’m now 99% back to a computer set up the way I want.

Further to #3; after rearranging the taskbar icons as desired, you can right-click the taskbar and select  Lock the taskbar, which is found near the end of the list of options.

That doesn’t work at all on my computer. I right click an icon and can drag it anywhere I want.

OK, I gave you the shortcut way to get to Lock the taskbar. Probably, like me, back when you first got Win 10, you probably read through the needed info to set things up.

For the current situation, I suggest you take the time to review Taskbar controls by going to Settings –> Personalisation –> Taskbar which presents the documented version of taskbar setup. It also presents a web link to MS support “How do I customise taskbars?

Locking the taskbar does *not* prevent the icons I’ve dragged onto it from being rearranged if I accidentally right click one (or more). Is there any way to stop that happening?

            • #2553482

Sorry about that. I reactivated Lock the taskbar on my system and agree that it appears to do nothing. I recall that sometime in the past, that it indeed locked the icons in place. The MS support article cited above claims that it is still supposed to lock the taskbar.

However, MS may well have sidelined Lock the taskbar, as a locked taskbar would have been an inhibitor to their recent “dribbling” of wonderful innovations(?) such as News and Interests and Search Highlights.

              Regards, Phil

Sorry for the delay in answering. My life is a bit hectic this past few days. If you read that article carefully, it’s only about resizing or moving the taskbar, not about reordering the icons you’ve put there.

You used to be able to completely lock the taskbar, but I guess MS decided we don’t need that any more.

Is 7+ Taskbar Tweaker the utility you are looking for?
