    We’ve got Win98 & Win2k boxes connecting to a WinNT 4 based domain.

Anyone know a way to make a Win2k box with a dial-in connection grab a new copy of the user’s NT domain profile? There’s a local cache that contains a copy of the user’s password – if the password is changed on some other PC, you still have to use the old password to log on to the box locally, and then the new password to log on to the domain via the dial-in connection.

This gets to be a pain – so, how can you sync the passwords after the fact?

basically you can’t. the dial-in box has to to be able to authenticate the change against the PDC

When you type Control-Alt-Del to login the dialog box that is displayed has a button marked “Options>>”.

If you click this then you should see a check box marked “Log on using dial-up connection”. If you select this then it should dial up and authenticate via the domain controller, updating the local cache at the same time.

So, if we’ve modified the account information on the domain, and use this method, it automagically updates the cached local profile.

We’ve never done a dial-up connection at that point – for connectivity, we’re using VPN over various connections. Do you have some hints or a pointer on making that work for the dial-up login connection?

          Sorry, I’ve never tried it.

I do know that it is possible to log out without dropping the dial up / VPN connection and then to log back in again, but I can’t remember how it’s done. If I remember then I’ll post again.

Noticing your comment about VPN connections. You can configure the VPN connection to dial another connection first, enabling the complete log in over dial-up sequence to function correctly.

Although I haven’t tried this, I am quite sure that it will work, and will provide a relatively painless way of updating your cached profiles.
