Since Firefox’s Add-ons Manager tab confuses things unnecessarily, perhaps it’s worth distinguishing here between (1) the Adobe Flash Player, which the Firefox Add-ons Manager tab misleadingly calls “Shockwave Flash” (currently at version 12.0.0.77), and the Adobe Shockwave Player (currently at version 12.1.0.150).

In my experience, the Adobe Flash Player is required for many websites, but “Shockwave Flash” add-on is dispensable. But given the way that Adobe/Firefox refers to these two different add-ons, it may be quite difficult for many users to distinguish between them.

Woody . . . maybe a quick tutorial on the difference would be useful.

      Regards,

      M.M.

3 Updates of FlashPlayer in a month. Not bad

The confusion is either made worse or dispensed with altogether by using Chrome/Chromium as your default browser, both in Windows and in Linux.

Google’s PepperFlash plugin is always up to date, doesn’t suffer from the sniping between Mozilla and Ubuntu on the one side, and Adobe on the other side, and updates itself silently when needed.

Altogether, much less unpleasantness than using Flash Player as a stand-alone or trying to keep up with the Firefox plugins.

IE 10 and 11 do not get their Flash Player updates from Adobe, but from MS Updates. Adjust accordingly, those who follow Woody’s MS-DEFCON patch rating system.
