Apple updated the iPod Touch this week, now with up to 256GB of storage and an A10 Fusion chip inside for support for AR. For those who need a portable music player or game device without a monthly cellular subscription that comes with the iPhone, it’s a good option, and this week’s updates made it faster and more roomy with storage.

I’m surprised there is still a market for these given the capability of phones these days. For twice the money I can have an iphone, which is less than I’d pay for two devices that I then need to carry.

      cheers, Paul

At first glance I was surprised as well, but then I read about the market Apple is going with these, which is mainly in areas where it would be impractical to have a smartphone with a cellular plan (gaming device or audio player for children who do not need a cell phone yet, AR capable learning device for education use in schools who don’t want to deploy phones with cellular capabilities, point-of-sale device in some businesses, etc.). For those of us who need smartphones, it is definitely more practical to carry a single device. Yet I can see there are some areas where deployments of the “iPhone without the phone” could be needed, and that’s the market the iPod Touch has sought after by keeping it alive.
