Ok so since I have been pretty much rebuilding my entire system I was thinking of getting a new monitor as well. My monitor as it is pretty much really sucks. So I figure if I REALLY want to see the greatness that is what I believe my graphics card is (though I could be completely dilusional about that as it does happen to me often) then I need to upgrade my monitor. I am currently leaning towards this BenQ monitor. I have done some research and think this would be a good deal for a good price. Anyway wanted to know all your opinions and/or if you had other suggested monitors that I should take a look into before making the decision.

AskWoody LoungerApril 14, 2006 at 4:37 pm #1009753I’m not familiar with the BenQ line of monitors but the site you linked to ( NewEgg ) does have some good buys there. I recently bought a Vision 19″ LCD monitor from them for $289.00 and I am very happy with the product. NewEgg also has some excellent buys on ViewSonics LCDs at NewEgg
There did seem to some discussion on if the unit had an 8 bit panel or 6 bit? Generally it had a good review.

AskWoody LoungerApril 14, 2006 at 5:30 pm #1009760Have you had a look at the various review sites, such as PC World? Either select the screen size you want or go further down and choose “monitors”. They don’t seem to have reviewed the precise model you’re looking at, though.
There are so many models available that choosing among them is a bit of a lottery…

AskWoody LoungerApril 14, 2006 at 8:26 pm #1009786This monitor has some impressive specs, though I have no first hand knowledge of its performance. My first comment is to make sure your graphics card can support the native resolution of the monitor, which is a bit unusual at 1680 by 1050. Yes it is wide screen, but is not 16:9 aspect ratio if you are into HDTV and even the # of rows is a bit less than 1080 for HDTV. The nearest “standard” resolution is 1600×1200, but the monitor does not have enough pixels to quite handle that either. Seems to be more of a gaming monitor. The one thing I do not like about it is the ambiguous spec on color depth. It may accept 8bit/color input, but the manufacturer’s web site indicates it produces “16.7 million colors WITH DITHERING”. Take that to mean less than 8 real bits of resolution per color in the panel. Hence, this may be fine for games, but I would not choose it for high quality imaging or pre-press photo editing. The 8ms response time is impressive assuming it is real and it would be great if you could see it perform before buying it.
