I started working on a brand new Dell Poweredge R430 rack server. Running server 2016. First order of business would be for me to run Windows Update which I normally do. There were 3 or 4 OS updates and a couple Defender updates. I get to the prompt to reboot and when Windows starts to load back up it stalls at “please wait”. I let it sit there for 15 minutes or more and nothing, so I had to do a hard shutdown.
Whenever I have an improper shutdown I always run a chkdsk to insure file system integrity. I open windows explorer, right click on C: expecting the properties windows to open so I can go to tools to check for errors. Right click does nothing. OK no big deal, I’ll run it from a command prompt. I go to right click on command prompt and only thing that shows is “pin to start”. No run as administrator or any other options.
I was able to run the command anyway since I was logged in as a local admin. Running a chkdsk /f on C: appears to have fixed the issue. But now waiting to see what else is borked.
The update that failed is KB4467691 and reported error of 0x800F0841. I’m going to try and re-install again. But just thought I’d share. Brand new out of the box, first thing I do is run windows update and it breaks the OS immediately after attempting to install updates.
That’s a first for me but I guess normal now a days.
