    Hello Windows secrets from,

It’s great to be here and I’m looking forward to speaking with you all and finally, to get the secret I am looking for!

As you can see in the title I’m a little stuck with my WiFi but more to the point of how poor my WiFi is. There could be a few problems so I will start at the beginning. I have 1 Wifi router in my front room which covers pretty much the whole house with a connection, maybe not the best but a connection. The router is kind of old so maybe it is not laying out the same signal I did before? is there any way to check this?

Now, this is what I think it is, My Girlfriends brother lives with us at the moment and has done for a few months due to unfortunate happenings. Anyway, I’m pretty sure he is downloading torrents all day and all night and this is what is having the most effect with my Wifi. How could I check to see if he is? and how can I reduce that amount of bandwidth that he receives? so then hopefully it will Wifi will improve?

Then there is the possibility that other people have got the password and are using my Wifi? which is also slowing it down? There are so many possibilities and I don’t know where to start. Is there any way I could personally check all of these problems above to try and find an answer? I will place some specs below of my Wifi router.

Router: TP-Link brought from a reliable site https://www.cheap.forsale/tp-link-router so i know it’s not fake or something dodgy.
    Serial code: To-Wr841N
    46756-l_10991880_002
If there is anything else i have missed that you guys need just comment below and i will add the information on!

    Thanks guys

      …Serial code: To-Wr841N…

      Wrong.

      Should be:
“Model No: TL-WR841N” as at bottom-right in the pic in your #1 post.

That unit doesn’t seem very old – speed and WiFi coverage should be adequate for normal household use.

Look through the router’s User Manual – there might be settings to limit your girlfriend’s brother’s access times and/or bandwidth quota.

EDIT: as suggested by Calimanco in his #2 post you should change your TL-WR841N’s login password; otherwise if you change any settings in the router your girlfriend’s brother could too-easily log into the router and undo any changes you have made.

I addition to the advice already been given regarding passwords, there should be a section in the router which will tell which devices are or have been connected to your router over the last 24hr lease, from which you will be able to ID any strangers.

To prevent your gf’s brother from hogging the bandwidth, you can use QoS to assign a % to him.

This procedure won’t put a cap on the amount of data he can use; it will, however, give him low priority whenever someone else is also online.
