• Newbie question about blocking ip addresses

I run Windows 7, MSSE, and Comodo firewall on my home-based desktop. Suppose I wanted to block IP addresses from China and/or Russia. Can anyone point me in the direction of how to do this? I’ve Googled, but what comes up seems to be for Linux and Ubuntu operating systems.

Thanks in advance for any help provided,
    Dick

See Block single IP address from the Comodo forums. It is a long thread so be persistent.

      Joe:
Thank you for the response. Before I go reading through the long thread, though, I want to clarify something. I’m not trying to block one or a few IP addresses.
What I’m trying to do is the the “God knows how many” IP addresses that originate from China and/or Russia. There are host-replacement files/systems. I was hoping that someone might maintain something similar: blocklists by country-of-origin.

        ….blocklists by country-of-origin.

You may find something usable from Blocking IP Address from RUSSIA and Overseas.

We use Hexamail Guard to tackle the spam problem by a number of mechanisms, and *.ru is one of the generic email addresses we block. Unfortunately it’s a business tool, running (for us) on Exchange. We don’t even think of blocking by IP address, since a potential 256*256*256*256-ish addresses gives rather too much scope. However, you could have a Lot of Fun with the ‘Major IP Blocks by Country’ list produced by Nir Sofer, who is second only to Mark Russinovich in the production of useful systems administration tools…

Thanks all. That was fun. Nils list 213,127,168 IP addresses for China. I think I’ll go shovel some snow or pound sand or something else.
So much for my thought (pipe-dream) that led to my starting this thread.

There are plenty of rouges on the internet, China and Russia do not have a monopoly on rouges.

Set up your firewall to block everything incoming – this is standard firewall behaviour. Then the only IP addresses to “see” your PC are ones your PC connects to.

      cheers, Paul
