• No sound on installing ME

I installed ME yesterday after a trojan ate my system. I’ve only just realised that I have no sound. Media player plays wavs etc but no sound. All connections are ok. Device manager reports no problems. However, in Control Panel/Sounds and mutimedia sound playback on Windows events are greyed out as is the volume control slider.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

If I remember right, you had Win 98 before Me, did you use the generic drivers of Me or did you download the drivers for your sound card and install them?

You are going to find that many of the “generic” Me drivers will not function as they should.

Also remember that you have been warned about tweaking Me evilgrin

        Dave-outstanding memory.

Youv’e probably nailed it. I must be using generic drivers since I’ve not reinstalled any.
Two further questions if you don’t mind:
        1. My system, though quite old, has been relatively stable and it has satisfied my needs. Any literature I had is long gone. How do I get the information needed to obtain the correct drivers?
2.Do you advise absolutely no tweaking despite there being a plethora of so-called perfromance-enhancing utilities available to download?

        Cheers

Hope you don’t mind ONE suggestion, Rob, since I was just “conversing” with you in another thread. If you’ve never done it yet, download and run Belarc Advisor. It’s free and it will tell you great stuff about the components of your machine that will help you go looking for drivers.

Al, I’ve downloaded Belarc but it gives me no information about my sound card. I eventually found my installation disk and tried to install. Device manager reports an unknown problem and only seems happy when the generic driver it recommends is installed.
            Would you advise me further?

            Many thanks

I hate to say this because it would be such an ill timed coincidence, but I have to wonder if the sound card died in the process??? Is there even a “Multimedia” section in the Belarc report? If you’ve GOT a sound card in that puppy and Belarc didn’t detect its presence, I’d think he’s a deep-six’er.

That’s the conclusion I came to. I deleted the one driver (midi) in device manager and tried to reinstall through Add New Hardware. No sound card was detected.
Oh well! Another day, another dollup.

              Cheers

See BigAl’s note below, for hardware and then find REAL drivers for any and all devices.

As for tweaking, I have seen that any tweaking can mess things up. As for drivers, that is NOT concidered tweaking as long as they are from the OEM or for that device model.
