Norton Internet Security Install Issue

I purchased the download version of Norton Internet Security 2005 for use on a computer running Windows XP. This machine was upgraded to XP from Win 98. Everything went well until I ran the Install program. I got a dialog box titled Windows Installer. It said I was missing a file and needed to put the Norton AV2003 Disk in my cd drive. It said it needed a file I didnt have. It needed [Product Name]Label. I also got a notice it was looking for NAV.MSI. I have looked on the Norton tech support site. It had instructions for getting this file for every flavor of windows except Win XP. It said I had to contact Microsoft for instructions. I have looked with no luck so far. Any suggestions?

I have checked my NIS 2005 CD, NAV.MSI is in the NAV folder.

Thanks for the reply. Since I have the downloaded version of NIS, I dont have a CD. I’m starting to think I need to get in touch with the Norton folks and request they send me a cd. I just hate the idea of having to wait that long. As it is, my computer isnt protected till I can get this issue solved.

Contact Symantec Support they should be able to be able to assist with this installation error. The downloaded version should be 1 file, NIS_Retail.exe and their site shows how installation should go

You say your computer isn’t protected, so I assume you don’t have a previous version. I’ve just had a trouble free installation of 2005. It instructed me to remove previous versions.Could you have downloaded an up-grade version and not had a previous version for it to refer to?

When I first encountered this problem, the instructions said I should go back and uninstall the previous version of Norton AV. I did that; but, it didnt solve the problem. In fact, it made things worse because I cant run either of them now. I like to think of myself as fairly computer savvy. (No where near as smart as most of the folks here; but, more aware than most). If I am having this much trouble, its no wonder so many others out there dont have any AV software at all. My head is starting to hurt.

It was because I wanted the Start Menu shortcuts where I want them, not where Norton wants them (sometimes I think Symantec is more arrogant than MS) – so I fixed with a quick registry hack and now Norton works fine – the way I want it.

You said that in the mean time you are unprotected – that is not good. I recommend you download and install the free (for home and non-commercial use) AVG anti-virus app from http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/%5B/url%5D. It is very capable at protecting your system while you wait. You may actually decide you like it better as it certainly is not the resource hog of Norton. Then when your get your Norton going, you can disable the memory resident portion and just use it “on-demand” – NEVER have two AV programs running at once.
