    Hi,

I hope someone can give me a shove in the right direction.

I’ve got a PC with an Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTC 768mb graphics card and I’m running Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 installed.

I hadn’t played any games for a while, but had some spare time on Easter Monday and played Rome – Total War, which is when my problems started. Ever since then, my PC either boots to a blank black screen or a BSOD which has an error message about the nvlddmkm.sys file.

The only way that I can get the PC to boot is to either uninstall the Nvidia Graphics driver or delete the nvlddmkm.sys file from Windows ==> system32 ==> drivers.

I’ve tried several things, without success, as follows:

Uninstalling the graphics driver and reinstalling it again – I’ve tried reinstalling both a current driver and an old driver.

Adding a couple of keywords to the registry, which was supposed to delay a TDR (?) file being loaded.

Reinstalling Windows 7. This didn’t work and just rolled back to my original installation of Windows.

Formatting my HDD and then installing an image from prior to when the problems started.

I haven’t tried putting in a new graphics card yet, but that is an option I am considering (if I can get one at the right price on ebay!!)

Can anyone suggest anything else that may help ?

    Thanks
    Steve

Have you done any tweaking or overclocking?

      Hi,

No, I’ve not done anything recently. I think I have tweaked it in the past, but not changed anything for ages.

Have you captured the BSOD details?

      Joe

My thoughts are that the last gaming session heated the card a little too much, given the likely age and that it may not have been cleaned recently, it may need reflowing to enable it to work correctly.

But please try to get hold of the minidumps and zip and attach them here, they should tell us more.

      • #1387284

Sorry if this is a silly question, but how do I find the minidumps ?

    • #1387296

The minidumps will be in the WindowsMinidump subfolder, copy them to the Desktop select them all then right-click > Send To > Compressed folder, upload the resulting zip.

      Hi Steve,

here’s how to set for Minidump. 33684-BSOD-Help

I can vouch for the 8800’s running very hot under load. I used to own one.
If this is the case you can download a small fan control app from EVGA to increase the fan speed for when your gaming.
You should also research that the game you’re playing is compatible with your OS AND specific card.

        Hi,

I’ve attached zip files of the minidumps.

I had a new PSU installed last year and when I had a look inside the case last night I noticed that one of the fans wasn’t working. I’ve now got that working, but it doesn’t seem to have helped with the BSOD.

        Thanks

The best troubleshooting help for the 0x116 TDR error that I know of: http://www.sysnative.com/forums/bsod-kernel-dump-analysis-debugging-information/35-video-tdr-timeout-0x116-0x117.html Study it and work through it carefully. Note that overheating is mentioned several times there – also, any hardware error trumps a software error – no amount of software/driver fiddling will fix a hardware problem!

Having said that, there are also driver issues you need to look into, you have known problematic drivers and drivers of Vista age – they need to be updated or removed, mid-2010 or later is the date you need to aim for with all 3rd party drivers. TDR is a timing/responsiveness issue, any ‘bad’ driver may add to the problem.

OK, thanks, I’ll work through that and see what happens. Was debating if the fan not working may have caused overheating problems, but will see how things go.

    • #1388106

      Hi,

I’ve solved the problem. I bought a second hand graphics card off ebay and it seems to be ok at the moment.

Thanks to everyone for their help.
